Dolph Lundgren, a world famous actor, but aslo a well-known Karate-ka attended the Astana Cup as a guest.
Sensei Lundgren was at the time in Kazakhstan to attend a movie festival, but although a tight schedule,he took his time to attend this tournament. After being greeted by President Midori and Kazakhstan¡Çs Country Representative Kartay Sarmanov , Sensei Lundgren enjoyed the fighting.
We are greatful to Sensei Lundgren for arranging his schedule so that he could visit this tournament.

I recently visited Kazakhstan to attend the Astana Cup, and during that time, I was able to meet with Sensei Dolph Lundgren (Sweden Branch), whom I had not seen for a long time. He happened to be in Kazakhstan for a film festival held at the same period, and despite of his tight schedule, managed to make the necessary arrangements so he could assist in the training of fighters in Kazakhstan, as well as attend the Astana Cup as a special guest. As you know, Sensei Lundgren is a world famous actor. Despite of his extremely busy schedule, he still shows a great dedication to the further spread of Kyokushin Karate, and I was very impressed to see him, still extremely fit, in his dogi training and teaching Karate. By looking at him, I felt strongly that a person, who has followed the Path of Kyokushin Karate, will be successful regardless of the path he chooses. Sensei Lundgren has accepted to come to next year’s World Championship to make a demonstration at the tournament. I am very grateful that he, despite of his busy schedule, will dedicate his valuable time to come to Japan. Thank you very much.

As mentioned on his biography and interviews, Dolph is training to get his 4th Dan black belt and exhibit at next year's World Tournament.

In 1998, you passed your Sandan, what was the examination?
It was two, or two and a half hours of technical examination, basic techniques, all the black belts, Shodan, Nidan, Sandan. When the Shodan are done they sit down, then you go and do all the Nidan stuff, and the Sandan. And then all the katas, all the way up, you do all the twenty-three or whatever it is. And then you do your own kata yo have to present, that you have designed yourself with the story, the name... then you take a little break, and they bring another fighters, maybe twenty minutes break, get a fresh gi on, and then, we did twenty fights, twenty two minutes fights, Kyokushin-style, with like a small break, twenty-thirty second break, when you line up. And they change so they're fresh most of the time, the guys you fight. So it was pretty tough. I remember one of my compatriots there in the third Dan, as as soon as it was over and they told to sit down he took one step, threw up, went “Oss!” and then went “orffgghh” and he ran off, crawled off to the bathroom, to get some paper and wiped it up. And then it was over, but it was a great experience you know.
I believe they wanted to give it you at some point, but you were keen to pass the test just like anyone else.
Yeah, Oyama wanted to give it to me, for sure he wanted to give it to me, way back. But I said no, it was embarrassing I couldn't do that. But this is like back in maybe 1989 or something, I think I wanted to go up for it another time in 92 or something but the time was not fit enough to train, to go up. So I ended up doing it nine years later. And Brian, I remember, he said “you should get this filmed because, you know ten years from now you're gonna wanna see this because you're not gonna do this again”, and I thought “yeah yeah sure”, but I got someone to shoot it, and yeah if I watch it now I'll say it exactly in his words, I won't do that again! (laughs)

preacher wrote:Wonder if Dolph will train in Stockholm with his old sensei Brian Fitkin, who by the way still takes new students. From time to time I see posters around town with Brian adverstising "Stockholm Kyokushin Karate".

I saw Lungren fight at the Crystal Palace back in 79 or 80, can't remember exactly. He was awesome, knocking them out all day long.

I was at the Australian Kyokushin titles in 82 where Hans (Dolph) Lundgren managed to struggle his way through the preliminaries, much to the distaste of guest (his instructor) Mas Oyama, who just before the final screamed something in Japanese into Lundgrens ear, whatever it was was very motivational, as Lundgren walked up to the mat, walked forward, one kick, opponent was asleep. Would love to know what Kyoshi Oyama said, would use it myself, LOL. Lundgren then met Grace Jones and went to work with her as bodyguard/boyfriend.
Awesome fighter, awesome presence, made an impact on this freckled kid.
