Well, the end of the interview is a bit unappropriate. :?

Interesting that he talks about a "mother complex" in this interview because AFAIR he never mentioned her, it was always about his father.

And in that TV interview you posted on Sept. 18th it was the first time I saw him blushing when they mentioned what Grace Jones says about him in her book.

He does/did but more discreetly, probably the same she seemed to make herself invisible while being loving and hard-working taking care of the kids and household in a very fifties manner (and working as a linguist).

He talks about getting into Karate because of his abusive father and that this is a typical reaction for getting this "out of your system". And then:

Translates:
INTERVIEW: And that helped?
LUNDGREN: I was able to get rid of some of the things. But on the other hand there was also a mother complex. Acting for sure has helped me to deal with that aspect of my psyche.

That's all he says about that.

I don't know if I am the only one that feels a little uncomfortable with him always talking about his dad being abusive. Perhaps Dolph's perception is a lot different than how his dad or mom saw things. Since his dad is dead, we can only hear one side of story and it kind of stinks that people remember his dad as this bad guy now, even though Dolph has also pointed out some of his good qualities.

It's not about seing him or describing him as a "bad guy" and I haven't read anything from anybody thiking in black and white like that. I never thought of it that way and it's not how or why Dolph is telling it. He talks about it the same way he talks about how he went from chemical engeeining to show business, as an explanation and a part what shaped him into who he is.

Until 2008, he was not comfortable to say anything about it, even to his kids... Since then, he broke through, came to terms with it and a few more things personally, engaged in therapy, and is more at peace with himself.

But like you said yourself, he also mentioned many times his dad's good qualities (which also influenced him), and how he forgave him. it's not that he was "all bad" and like he said as well, his father was the fruit of a certain generation who didn't know any better, especially since he was abused himself.

When it comes to an abused child (and wife since his mom was abused too), and Dolph was quite marked physically, so here's no denying it or reason to make it up, I don't think there are two sides of the story no matter what. It's too grave, and "abuse is abuse", especially to a child who doesn't know better, and therefore internalizes it as "normal"or as "love" and takes the guilt for himself. And Dolph is a prime exemple of how the abused often wouldn't even be able to talk to anyone about it, and waited until his 50s to be able to.

I had never heard the term "mother complex" so I was wondering what he meant, is it the same as the Oedipus complex?
