Translation:
When did you began your practice of karate?
I began to practice Judo in 1973 in Sweden when I was young but immediately I realized that the type of contact hand-to-hand was not to my liking. Then I practiced Goju-Ryu karate and finally, in 1974, I began the practice of Kyokushin Kai Karate. Since then I participated in W.U.K.O championships and other international championships like the British Open Knockdown in London (winning in 1980 and 1981), Australian Open Knockdown Tournament (winning in 1982), II World Open Karate Tournament in Tokyo in 1979 and also in Sweden. My career in the world of the cinema ended the competitive sport life after I made my first film but I have not let it stop my practice of karate in all this time.
What does karate do for you?
It has helped me much in life. The spectacle of the world can distract you from many of the important things in life. To me karate has helped me to maintain my concentration in my studies (a Masters of Chemical Engineering at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston - the U.S.A.), in my work (more than 30 films) and in my life (he is a father of an exemplary family).
What do you look for in the martial arts?
For it to help me to continue in this life. To me it maintains my concentration, maintains my youth and, most important, it maintains my healthy physique and mind. It maintains 'purity' to me.
