Was awarded a prize as "best antagonist actor in an international feature" at a "festival" where most winners are linked to Nu Image/Millennium in some way or another... The organiser seems friends with Avi Lerner...

Maybe 1989 for the candids - with dark hair?

I'd think so comparing to other pics post-PUNISHER from late 1988 early '89...

Yes - late '88 or early '89 seems right.

That set of images taken in Munich where DL was promoting Red Scorpion date from that time and sport the same 'look'. Presumably he was prepping for The Punisher at that time?

THE PUNISHER had wrapped by late October '88, he then went to do some RED SCORPION and early PUNISHER promo in France, Germany and Japan late '88 early '89.

Interesting; he was still sporting dark hair, then, when in Germany to promote Red Scorpion. So he'd be prepping for Dark Angel, maybe?

These were the Munich set I was referring to.

DARK ANGEL was to start filming soon (a few weeks later, mid-February 1989) but also, and Dolph mentioned it, dying your hair meant back then that it would take 6 months to a year or more before it washed off.

Even by mid-1990 in COVER-UP you can tell he still sported darker roots (and I wouln't be surprised if they enhanced his blondness during SHOWDOWN because his hair were particularly, strikingly blond in that one).

Unless, of course, dark hair is actually his natural colouring...... :D

(Perish the thought!)

Well, not "crow black" but I have suspicions his hair color used to be varying between blond, red-ish/ginger and fair during his late teens / early adulthood but he wouldn't have had them this dark.

I myself used to be very blond (but really curly/frizzy unlike D ^^) until I was about 20, then light fair but changing with seasons, and now it's really dark.

These likely from the same day/night show under different lights:

Quite some variation in hair colouring right there!

It's certainly very apparent that D's hair shade changes over time - with the blond look only becoming the norm in the mid 80s. The pictures of him as a teen and younger man do tend to be darker - or even reddish.

I recall reading a French Cine-News article from the mid-80s in which he describes how Grace cut his hair for him the better to show his 'front splendid' (sic) and the images in that article all show his new style as significantly blond, which was, of course, also his 'Drago' look.

It seems likely that his publicists - and public expectation - have encouraged him to live up to the 'blond Swede' image and to retain that look when not playing a role requiring darker hair (for example as Frank Castle) because, as everyone knows, ALL Swedes are blond......
