HOW and WHEN did you become a DOLPH FAN?

Postby dolphage on 16 Aug 2007, 21:23

Like for many others, the first movie I saw with DL was "Rocky IV" and it blew my little kiddie -mind! He was so fckng AWESOME! This giant, blonde machine of a man, just the embodiment of invulnerability. I actually started rooting for him. And when Rocky won I was devastated. Still am... Punkass Rocky!

Mine was The Punisher, at the tender age of 10. I had never heard of him before, but was really into comic books and comic book movies. I found a VHS in the rental section of my local jumbo video, so I took the "get one, get another free" deal and also rented the 1943 Phantom of The Opera. (NOTE: I remember all of this because they were the last films I rented from there. I went to return them and the place had gone out of business).

Anyway, I had never seen a film so dark and violent before, and Dolph's performance was fascinating (my father, the movie specialist he is, scoffed at this claim). And yes, I originally bitched about the lack of the skull.

Anyways, a couple years later I get a copy of it on DVD, and read up on Dolph in the special features, which lead to the discovery of Red Scorpion, Cover-Up, and Showdown in Little Toyko. From then on, I was a true Dolph Lundgren fan.

my first was MOTU, followed by The Punisher (am a huge comic fan so was very up for it - tho a little dispointed to begin with, lack of skull etc), then Dark Angel/I come in Peace (my fav) then hooked.
- Lets be honest. This is just a case to you, to me its more. Much more! and if you try and take this disk I'm going to hit you very, very hard!

My first Dolph movie was Master of the Universe...I was really young, too young to realise how bad it was, and I would watch it over and over again. Then a few years later, I saw Rocky IV (I guess I was 8), and I was like "hey I've seen this guy somewhere..." And there you go, from the second I understood he was also in MOTU, I was a fan :)

As I said I got He-Man and Skeletor action figures for my fifth birthday, I was a MOTU freak. So when the movie came out (I was eight) I was blown away, it was like magic to me, it might seem cheesy and cheap but that was the best thing for an eight year old. So then I started to look for magazines, pictures, anything I could find about the film so I started to become a Dolph L. and a film fanatic by the same token. So not only Dolph was the guy playing my hero but from what I read he seemed to be a really good guy in real life too and was doing karate just as me! Two years later I saw Red Scorpion & Punisher when they came out (at the time there was a lot of Dolph coverage in mags so I'd seen a lot of preview articles so I had been anticipating both for a long time and I had to scam to see Punisher cause it was PG13 in France and I was not even 11!)...

It sounds like most of us discovered him with Rocky IV or MOTU...

Sasha, you saw Showdown in Little Tokyo when you were 5??

I had already seen Rocky IV, but didn't become a fan then. It was when I saw him playing my hero that captured my interest from then on. I didn't even realize they were making the movie until I saw Dolph on the cover of the He-man and the Masters of the Universe magazine. I scoured the magazine racks from then on looking for information on him. My mom took me to the theatre to see MOTU for my birthday, it opened just 3 days before. I was hooked. I have been a Dolph fan since and I am still a MOTU fan.

I'll repost my answer here so that we have a nice string of "confessions". ;-)

As a teen I was doting on Sly, tried to sneak into the Rambo movies (Certification: 16 and above, Rambo 2: 18 and above). And then I watched Rocky IV. And I was hooked. From that moment on, Sly began to fade and Dolph was my new star. At first it was difficult to get his movies because back then I didn't even own a VCR. Only with the rise of DVD players and ebay I started the movie collection and was able to watch all his movies. Now I own most of them, a couple of posters (one signed) and an old contract with his agent. Best collectors item would be that giant banner from Rocky IV with Dolph (opposite the Rocky banner during the final fight). But I still haven't figured out where I would hang it because I don't own an arena.

Sometimes I like to think I will set up a Dolph exhibition in some gallery or something and be able to hang all the foreign movie posters and memorabilia I have...!

That would be a very good idea Jox.

You could always use it as a sheet?
And since you have a signed poster, I assume you met the man?

The first Dolph movie I`ve seen was "The Punisher" in 1990. I was 9 then. But at that time I didn`t paid any special attention to Dolph. A few years later came "The Universal Soldier" and I was REALLLY impressed with Mr. Lundgren :D Heh, I didn`t recognize him 8) My elder brother said to me: "See this guy? That`s the Punisher, do you remeber him?" Then I started to buy his movies, my favourite ones are: "Red Scorpion", "Universal Soldier" and "Joshua tree". I`ve still been his great fan. :P

A sheet? Do you know how big that banner is? Guess I could cover half my appartment with it. ;-)

And no, unfortunately I haven't met him yet. Dreamed about spending my vacation in Marbella and accidentally meet him at the gym though. ;-) I bought the poster and the contract on ebay.

Lady Marion: I see we have the same taste regarding his movies. Red Scorpion and UniSol are my favorites, too, followed by Men of War and SILT.
