At the risk of mixing sports metaphors, the game ball here really goes to Lundgren, who wears those 33 years in the wilderness on his face, while tripping down memory lane by prodding his son to "break" opponents. Everyone, though, dives in with conviction, investing the emotional scenes with more heft than they probably deserve.

Did CNN just praise and made Dolph overshadow the rest of the cast?! :o

By the end, the movie has become a shameless and, yes, effective ode to fathers and sons everywhere. To wit, and I mean it: Dolph Lundgren in close-up, in various moods of granite determination and unexpected emotional thawing, qualifies as this sequel’s most legit surprise.

Anyone seen it at midnight screenings?

Holy moly... Michael Phillips giving Dolph a shout out for his performance. I must say big D must of really put in work if that's the case. I'm really looking forward to seeing this now. Seems Dolph is getting praise from a lot of the positive reviews! This is fantastic for him if this does well at the box office.

'Creed II' Director Steven Caple Jr. Owes Michael B. Jordan Three Real Punches

Were you a fan of the Rocky franchise growing up?
Definitely growing up. It’s weird when someone says they haven’t watched a Rocky movie. When you say movies, that’s something that you just think of. It has such an impact on the people, let alone the culture. The first one I saw—I was born in ‘88, so this is post-Rocky IV—so the first one was Rocky V, and it was on TV rotation. I wasn’t looking at it as a critic, I was looking at it as a six-year-old kid like “yeah, Tommy Gunn! Aw man, he betrayed Rocky!” Like that’s my stuff.
Sly took risks, he’s bold, that’s what I like about him. So when you look at Rocky IV, the iconic Drago and he’s a robot and it’s like sci-fi, that’s the genre he’s stepping into. So I’m not mad at that at all. But as a kid, all this stuff is cool, but [as] I got older, I can appreciate the filmmaking. I've had to do a lot of interviews, and it’s like “is it gonna be as cartoonish as Rocky IV?” It made the most money because people were able to still connect with it. I’m not really looking at it as a Rotten Tomatoes score, I’m looking at it for the impact that you and I had. When I first saw Rocky IV, I was like “Po’s not dead, stop playing man. He’s gonna get up.” Then I seen it like “nah this dude is dead. Drago has to go!” That’s where we were at. [Stallone] created this very Shakespearean-like franchise.

What was it like working with Dolph Lundgren now?
Dolph, for one? The smartest guy. He plays these really cookie-cutter villain-esque characters on film, right? Very genre based. He wanted to take advantage of this opportunity. He knows how he’s looked at by the people, so when he stepped onto the project, he was like “man I’m so glad you wrote this meeting in there.” 'Cause that wasn’t in there—the whole arc with his son, the sit-down with [Rocky]—I wrote that. One of my favorite movies is Heat, and I was like I’m gonna treat it like it was De Niro and Al Pacino sitting down. When I approached the film, I really wanted to tap into that, and he was excited. He was like “bro, I have lines! Last one, I didn’t have lines. I had ‘if he dies, he dies,’ and ‘I must break you,’” which are iconic. On top of the lines, I wanted to make it authentic, so I was like “you should speak Russian.” So he learned it really fast, over 40 plus lines in Russian in the film. Some scenes we deleted out of the movie, but he learned a lot. He gave me his all. He never got an opportunity to do any of those kinds of motions on screen.

Sylvester Stallone wanted Apollo Creed to appear as a ghost in 'Creed 2' — here's why it didn't happen
https://www.businessinsider.fr/us/sylve ... ii-2018-11

CREED II is already off to break first film box-office records 8)

‘Ralph’ Breaking The B.O. With $18M Weds., Potential Record $94M Five-Day; ‘Creed II’ Pumping $11M Opening Day, $59M Five-Day
https://deadline.com/2018/11/ralph-brea ... 202505947/
MGM/New Line’s Creed II is spotting $11M today, including last night’s $3.7M, for a five day of $59M.

Warner Bros.’ Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald eyeing $7M today, between $41M-$43M from Wednesday to Sunday and a running cume by then between $115.5M-$117.5M.
Wednesday 7:18 AM Update:
Never underestimate Adonis Creed. MGM’s Creed II is off to a fantastic start grossing $3.659M last night, a figure that beats Creed‘s $1.4M pre-Thanksgiving Tuesday night by 64%. Creed II‘s cash will be rolled into today’s opening number. New Line co-financed the movie, and Warners has overseas and Canada. The first Creed, distributed by Warner Bros, posted a first day of $6M and a five-day of $42.1M. Creed II, rated PG-13, is looking to punch $55M.

'Creed 2' has already beaten a box-office record held by the first movie, and is headed for a big weekend
https://www.businessinsider.fr/us/creed ... ce-2018-11
"Creed II" beat out the first movie in the franchise ("Creed") in Tuesday night Thanksgiving preview screenings.
The sequel took in $3.7 million, while the original had $1.4 million.
Disney's "Ralph Breaks the Internet" just edged out "Creed II" with $3.8 million to be the biggest earner for Thanksgiving preview screenings ever, also beating 2015's "Creed," which previously held the record.
"Creed II" is on its way to having a big Thanksgiving holiday weekend at the box office.

The sequel to the 2015 spin-off of the "Rocky" franchise — which focuses on Adonis Creed (played by Michael B. Jordan), the son of Rocky Balboa's rival-then-friend Apollo Creed — has already bested the first "Creed" movie in its Tuesday night preview showings.

MGM reports that the movie took in an estimated $3.7 million, according to Deadline, which tops the preview showings for 2015's "Creed," which took in $1.4 million.

That $3.7 million will be added to the box office earned by "Creed II" on Wednesday, its first full day in theaters.

And in a photo finish, Disney's "Ralph Breaks the Internet" just edged out "Creed II" with $3.8 million to now hold the record for biggest Thanksgiving previews box office ever. The previous record holder was the first "Creed" movie.

The first "Creed," which also opened on Thanksgiving, took in $42.1 million over the holiday weekend in 2015. Industry projections have the sequel earning around $55 million this weekend.

"Creed II" has been powered by the fans of the "Rocky" franchise and given a late push by an 80% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

And Business Insider thinks the movie is a "worthy sequel that still has those needed references to the 'Rocky' franchise the fans crave, but makes a point to build up Adonis' own story."

Loved this flick. It's tough to take aspects from ROCKY IV while still being a legit CREED movie but this film pulls it off. We know more or less what is going to happen in these movies yet you still can't help but get caught up in them as if this is the first entry in the series.

Extremely pleased by how they handled the Dragos in the film. Would have been so easy to just make them a rehash of how the Russians were in IV. They don't do that at all. Lundgren gets off a couple lines worthy of being a villain but there really is much more to his relationship with his son. Great work from him here, especially during the climactic fight.

Dolph Lundgren returns (and delivers fine and, I swear, nuanced work with minimal dialogue) as Ivan Drago, the Russian heavyweight who killed Apollo Creed in the ring in what was supposed to be an exhibition.

'Creed II' Box Office: 'Rocky' Sequel Opens With Record $12M Wednesday 8)
https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmende ... 1480a0644f
The path of the 42-year-old Rocky franchise is an odd one. It began as an Oscar-winning drama, slowly morphed into a blockbuster series that bordered on outright fantasy, and then returned to its roots as a character play. And now the franchise has morphed into Creed, which stands out by being a rare character-focused drama that can pull in big bucks as well as an all-too-rare example of a major studio released fronted by black actors.

Rocky stood out as overly crowd-pleasing and borderline escapist in the grim post-Watergate cinematic era, opening right between Jaws and Star Wars. But Creed II, which plays as a sequel to both Creed and Rocky IV (the franchise’s most fantastical entry) stands out by virtue of being an event movie specifically because it’s a major studio release that’s not a mega-budget superhero or fantasy action franchise. All of this brings us to the fact that Creed II is shaping up to be a breakout sequel.

The first Creed rode rave reviews and copious media coverage to a $42 million Wed-Sun debut three Thanksgivings ago. It ended up with a $109.7m domestic and $173.5m worldwide cume on a $35m budget, snagged Sylvester Stallone an Oscar nomination and put Ryan Coogler, Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson in the spotlight. Even without director Coogler at the helm (Steven Caple Jr. is directing this time from a script initially penned by Cheo Hodari Coker, Juel Taylor and Stallone), the franchise is coming out of the gate even stronger this time out.

Yes, the rave reviews, superb word-of-mouth and post-theatrical popularity of the first Creed, along with Jordon and Thompson both offering fan-favorite turns in exceptionally popular MCU movies (Black Panther and Thor: Ragnarok), have turned Creed II into another biggie. The first Creed earned $6 million on its first Wednesday, including $1.5m in Tuesday previews. It legged it to a $29.6m Fri-Sun/$42m Wed-Sun debut frame.

So it’s of note that Creed II, which miraculously turned out to be good movie despite going with the lazy and fan-bait premise of having Apollo Creed’s son battle the son of Dolph Lundgren’s Ivan Drago (as Ebert used to say, it’s not what it’s about but how it’s about it), has earned around $11.6 million on its opening day including $3.7m in Tuesday previews. That’s a 93% jump from Creed’s opening day and the biggest opening day ever for a live-action Thanksgiving release. If it’s as leggy as Creed, we’re looking at a huge $77m five-day haul.

It kicked off to top the EXPENDABLES movies at least domestically...

Second everything Moltisanti said. As fun as ROCKY IV is, let's face it, it's also the most ridiculous of the franchise. It's a full-on comic book/music video come to life (which I know is one of its many charms). But I am constantly in awe at how everyone involved took the events of IV, and not only acknowledged them for this installment, but grounded them in this new reality that Creed has established.

As for Lundgren, he's bringing it in every scene. Similar to ROCKY IV, he does most of the acting with his eyes. And he and his "son" are not villains who you love to hate, but sympathize with and almost feel sorry for. In many ways, I found myself actually rooting for them in the film's climactic final bout. While a spinoff of the Dragos is not happening, I personally think that the CREED storyline could be ended at this point. I'd love to see where Drago Sr. and Drago Jr. go at this point...

Lots to say about this one, but I won't, other than it's easily one of the best and most memorable films of 2018.
