Despite his reputation and lackluster box office record, he was continually able to get the likes of Ben Kingsley, Michael Madsen, Christian Slater, Michelle Rodriguez, Jason Statham, Ray Liotta, and Burt Reynolds to star in his films. Maybe they were simply paychecks for these actors, but he must have really offered these actors a ton for them to star in his work...
I have to disagree with this to some degree. The only name actor he worked with that was popular at the time was Jason Statham, and he's not exactly the most picky actor. Christian Slater's run as a heartthrob was pretty short-lived and now he's trying to get his third TV show off the ground. Ray Liotta never really capitalized on his Field of Dreams/Goodfellas jackpot and then after a string of bad movies he had botched plastic surgery. Burt Reynolds was the biggest movie star in the world at one time and now his resume includes a fake Universal Soldier sequel. Michael Madsen seems to make 10 straight-to-DVD movies a year, but to be fair he says it's his chance to be the star and tries to mix them in between big studio supporting roles. Ben Kingsley at the time was probably the biggest surprise, but he also has A Sound of Thunder and Thunderbirds on his resume now. So Boll probably offered some of them a lot of money compared to what they usually make, and for others it was a paying job like any other.
Had Russell Crowe, Tom Cruise, Bruce Willis, Julia Roberts or Natalie Portman appeared in a Boll movie... now that would've been a sign of the apocalypse.
