Gwildor costume design study by Theresa Cardinali

1987 Masters of the Universe Costume design study for Character: Gwildor. I was literally asked to sculpt this figure over night by Gary Goddard, Director and my boss at at the time at Landmark Entertainment Group. Art work designs were provided. I was especially intrigued by making all the accouterments Gwildor was wearing and holding.

Joe De Meis, My art director at the time completed the figure finishing in even less time then i had to sculpt ................Joe are in the film credits and listed as Other Crew

The Maquette went missing after the film was finished but, I am sure it has a good home.

Frank Langella on Dolph from Sundance:
ESQ: I'm personally curious about certain names, like Dolph Lundgren on Masters of the Universe. He doesn't necessarily have the reputation, but he's an incredible intellect.

FL: We interacted rarely, because Dolph was very much involved in his fame and staying in shape, and we didn't have that much to do with each other. You know, we had scenes, but we didn't hang out. We weren't buddies.

Langella's memoir Dropped Names: Famous Men and Women As I Knew Them is coming out March 27

African Handpainted Poster From Ghana (it's yours for 500€)
Image
This is an hand-painted movie poster painted by a talented artist in Ghana. The artist is a leader in African film poster paintings and has many of his works published in the book "Extreme Canvas: hand painted movie posters from Ghana."

This MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE painting was used to advertise a mobile film screening in Ghana. The painting is signed by the artist. The painting is oil on canvas. Size is 1.5 meters x 1 meter. This is authentic, real oil painting-- not a print!

Very detailed painting and in excellent condition.

This is from the description of the book about the hand painted movie posters in Ghana.
"In the 1980s a group of entrepreneurs in Ghana created small-scale, mobile film-distribution empires, hitting the road with videocassettes, television monitors, portable gas-powered generators and rolled-up, hand-painted, artist-signed canvas posters. This new medium created the first opportunity for some of the best young painters in Ghana to express themselves on a public scale. In the frequent absence of an original image upon which to base the work they had been commissioned to produce, the artists inevitably created cinematic paintings that were largely interpretive and imagination-driven."

Stunt prop Cosmic Key
http://www.icollector.com/Stunt-Cosmic- ... _i11537368
The hero version of this prop cost an estimated $150,000 to build and needed a team of experts to attend the many malfunctions on set. This stunt version is constructed of dense rubber with metallic hand-painted “keys,” and detailed with silver foil, metal springs and exposed wiring. Some of the forked tines are missing. The piece stands 18 in. tall and exhibits wear and slight soiling. From the collection of multiple Academy Award-winner for Best Makeup, Greg Cannom.

Knowing I'd worked for Cannon Films in the mid to late '80s, a guy asked me this morning about Dolph Lundgren and the making of Masters of the Universe . I replied as follows: "All I did was write the press notes and visit the set, once. I remember very little because I knew it was a cheeseball enterprise from the get-go and I didn't give a shit about any of it. The idea of the Golan & Globus machine attempting to arouse the geek/comic-book fanbase was hopeless from the start...pathetic."

"What was the atmosphere at Cannon when the film opened with close to no publicity and flopped?," he wrote back. "Everyone knew it was a tank early on so there was this air of funereal resignation all through production and post-production...everyone just going through the motions," I answered.

a guy asked me
That guy was yours truly.

I never received it the answer email but thanks for making this a blog entry! Seemed to have generated a lot of comments!

Gary Goddard himself dug some never-before-seen concept art from the recently deceased artist Ralph McQuarrie (STAR WARS, BACK TO THE FUTURE, TOTAL RECALL) who worked on the project for only 3 weeks because he was already committed to COCOON...
(I hope he brings us some artworks from French legend Moebius next)

Gary Goddard responded to fans (our own Travis among others ;)) on his blog and here's the interesting stuff he had to say: 8)
Travis
What was it like working with Dolph?

Travis,

Working with Dolph was interesting as he had just come off of the ROCKY movie and he was quite a major star at the time. But we had a good working relationship and he defintely was committed to the work at hand. He trained daily to stay in shape, he participated in the staging sessions (no double for those), and he generally gave his all. He definitely had a very strong work ethic and was always ready for whatever was required. Imagine being clamped only at your ankles, onto a “flying disc”, that was in reality mounted on a camera truck, that was moving down an urban main street at 45 to 50 miles an hour with nothing to hold on to! Dolph as like “Okay – I trust you guys — lets do it.” We had a few minor disagreements here and there, which is normal on a movie of that size and complexity — but overall, I think Dolph gave the effort 100% and we got along well throughout the shoot.

Matthew –

Okay FIRST, I have been searching and seaching for the that cardboard video standee as I was promised one by the video release company and never got it. So – take a few great photos of it and send to me will you? Second, we are trying to convince Warner Brothers to release a 25th Anniversary DVD and/or Blue Ray! We have an entirely new documentary that Roger Lay has made on MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE (he also did the documentary on the Making of Captain Power which was part of our DVD Anniversary release as well) which we would release, along with other never before seen art and design elements. So lobby hard with Warner Brothers and let them know you want this! As far as a book of all the art – thats a great idea and we have been approached by a publisher. I am supportive of this and hope to see it come to be. Thanks for your enthusiastic support and kind words — its great to hear from you and from so many other fans of the movie. Now don’t forget to send me some photos of the video cut out display!

-Gary Goddard, CEO

Gary is a very nice guy I had the pleasure to interview last summer and he's still very fond of MOTU and his experience of making it.

Haven't seen it in a while (more than 5 years), so I didn't remember anything, but it was good. For me more interesting, honnest and generous than any Star Wars flick, and I really like Gary Goddard Style (I was fond of my Captain Power vhs when I was a kid).
Good 80's movie (with cheesy parts, of course, but that's part of the charm of the pic).
