Interview with Roger Lay Jr on CAPTAIN POWER... and the aborted Blu-ray special edition of MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE (WB will release it barebones with the 2001 commentary because they didn't want to spend anything on a "catalog title")... but he and Gary will include some of their special features on the release of the He-man documentary TOY MASTERS. (at 19:25 mark) 8)

So the Blu-ray release date seems set for October 2, but as said it's not gonna have any more features than the 2001 DVD commentary.

It's a shame that Warner Bros. is opting to not include this feature, especially considering it's the 25th Anniversary release. They don't want to put any more effort into it than need be I guess...

Any idea on when the TOY MASTERS documentary will be released?

They're currently finishing it to screen it this summer at a film festival or two, so the BD/DVD won't be out until a few months later I guess (fall as well?).

Cool! 8)
Back by popular demand, all on one CD! Bill Conti's rousing action score for energetic Cannon Group sci-fi fantasy featuring sword-wielding Mattel character He-Man, directed by Gary Goddard, starring Dolph Lundgren, Frank Langella, Courtney Cox. Conti anchors with requisite major key hero theme, then builds masterful score via inventive use of secondary theme, smaller ideas, note-packed action cues. Conti spotlights upper brass in high registers, also tips hat to propulsive rhythms throughout. A dynamic 1980's film score, made available again courtesy MGM. Music originally appeared in highlight form on Varese Sarabande, then saw expansion from Edel, arriving still later as 2-CD set on La-La Land with score split over two discs and rounded out with earlier highlight album. Intrada release includes identical presentation of complete score but fits it snugly on single CD. Colorful design work from Joe Sikoryak, informative notes from Dan Schweiger round out nice pacakge. Harry Rabinowitz conducts Graunke Orchestra of Munich. Available while quantity and interest remains!

Stuart Land talks about the sculpting of Skeletor's staff

Once again I found myself at Boss Films working on Masters of the Universe. This may have been the first of the comic book movies. My first and most important project was to sculpt the Staff of Skeletor. I really enjoyed making this even though I had to sculpt parts of it several times over because of ordered changes. It was sculpted from Roma Plastilina, but I used too soft a clay because the original design didn't need a harder clay, but after the changes, it became very difficult to sculpt because the entire back portion had to be so precise. Being really hot inside the shop didn't help matters. Upon completion, it was molded, then two cast in fiberglass, and painted, one gold, and one silver for the evil staff.

Next, I made some sword sheaths for the main actors out of vacuform plastics.

Unfortunately, by this time in history, the comradery was pretty much gone, as people had left for various reasons and others had taken their places. Now, the shop seemed more like a factory.

MASTERS panel at COMIC-CON July 13 with notably director Gary Goddard, visual effects supervisor Richard Edlund, production designer William Stout and maybe Dolph himself (again I may have something to do with it)!

8:30-9:30 Toy Masters and the 25th Anniversary of Masters of the Universe— To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the release of the live-action He-Man feature Masters of the Universe, the "Seacrest of Sci-Fi," Robert Meyer Burnett (Femme Fatales, Hills Run Red, Free Enterprise) brings you a powerful discussion of Toy Masters, the first ever feature-length documentary on the worldwide phenomenon that inspired an entire generation of children and became a billion-dollar franchise. The film features interviews with the key creative personnel behind every version of the bestselling toy line and all incarnations of Masters of the Universe on television, film, stage, and print, tracing the inception and ups and downs of the fantasy juggernaut. Everyone involved in the 30-year history of this historic franchise makes appearances in the film, including such genre figures as J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5, Thor), Richard Edlund (Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark), William Stout (Conan The Barbarian, Pan's Labyrinth), Lou Scheimer (Filmation), Michael Westmore (Star Trek franchise), Don Glut (The Empire Strikes Back, Transformers Animated), and even Dolph Lundgren, who played He-Man in the live-action film. Panel participants include Roger Lay, Jr. (director/producer), Cory Landis (producer), Gary Goddard (director), J. Michael Straczynski (writer), Mark Taylor (visual designer, Masters of the Universe toy line 1980s), Ted Mayer (visual designer/product engineer, Masters of the Universe toy line 1980s), Jack and Leslie Wadsworth (live-action He Man and She Ra, Masters of the Universe: Power Tour), and a special surprise guest! The Intrada soundtrack re-edition not only features the complete score on a single disc but also includes a nice booklet, too bad it's only illustrated with captures and not original still photographs but they're well chosen and the liner notes are somewhat better than the La-La Land edition (copied and pasted from Wikipedia) and features comments from Goddard.
