Press Release | Power of Grayskull: The Definitive History of He-Man and The Masters of the Universe

Official Press Release | Sep 30, 2015

POP CULTURE FOCUSED FILMMAKERS TEAM UP TO BRING FANS
POWER OF GRAYSKULL: THE DEFINITIVE HISTORY OF
HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE

(LONDON, ON, CANADA, September 2015) Southwestern Ontario filmmakers join forces to document the past, present and future of iconic toy, cartoon, and comic line, Masters of the Universe.

Randall Lobb, writer/director/producer of Turtle Power: The Definitive History of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Rob McCallum, writer/director of Nintendo Quest: The Most Unofficial and Unauthorized Nintendo Documentary Ever! once again put their pop culture fandom on film with a deep dive into the history of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

Power of Grayskull, the latest in FauxPop Media’s Definitive Film series, will dig into the rich history of what has become one of the most beloved and enduring pop culture icons for millions of fans worldwide.

From concept to comic book, cartoons, movies and beyond, the enormous popularity of Masters of the Universe has spawned legions of loyal fans who’ve turned the cosmically-powered barbarian into an industry. Decades after its creation, MOTU is still going strong – a franchise rich in collectibles, conferences and, more importantly, universal themes that still resonate with audiences after all these years.

By talking to industry insiders, artists, writers, voice actors and the fans themselves, the filmmakers will uncover the truth behind the Power of Grayskull, revealing the rich meaning in a childhood hero whose appeal is much more than simple nostalgia.

In association with Pyre Productions USA L.L.C., FauxPop Media hopes to launch a Kickstarter campaign in early 2016 to galvanize support, involve the community, and raise funds for what promises to be a demanding production. Possible rewards for support may include:

• Production cells from the animated series
• Signed prints and memorabilia from key creators
• Single and multi-disc signed collector sets
• Supporter credits in the documentary

Viendammge got to visit Gary Goddard's office and browsed through some unused MOTU script drafts!
http://www.dammagedgoods.com/2016/01/ma ... lives.html
I was lucky enough to tour The Goddard Group's offices this week, birthplace of theme park attractions, live tours, stage productions and much more. Sitting in the corner is an original video store stand for Masters that was sent in by a fan who had an extra. I also flipped through several drafts of the script, one of which featured bookend appearances by The Princess of Power, She-Ra!

(which is not in the two drafts I have)

$35,058 pledged of $25,000 goal leady reached and still 29 days to go...
Hoping they're doing this documentary right and not just seduce the fans sensibility for the subject matter.

Here's an in-depth analysis and review of the MOTU film from the guys at the Now Playing Podcast. Gets to the point, and there's not a ton of unnecessary tangents and "let's have a beer" behavior:

If you dig through the archives, there's also a similar review of '89's THE PUNISHER.

10 days to go and they amazingly raised $50,000 out of a $25,000 initial goal. The sure know how to sell a project. Anyone seen their TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES documentary?

Campaign ultimately raised $76,050 from 1108 people. Just hoping this doesn't turn out too cheesy because the filmmakers admited they didn't know much about MOTU and their Youtube hang outs/Q&A kind of are (cheesy, or very American geeky I'd say) and feature a lot of gargarising about how awesome they are over the two hours (!) they run...

Kellan Lutz posted a pic of his MOTU collection including a signed photo from Dolph that says "To Kellan, from one He-man to another"

Kellan Lutz @kellanlutz

#TBT to the Kel-Man/He-Man days. I still have a huge #MOTU collection. I think of it as my #HomeSecurity.

Just saw it theatrically, great documentary for those who like stories about unproduced movies!

And indeed not only you can see that Moebius' sketches for MOTU were influenced by his own work on Jodorowsky's aborted DUNE, and later on they show two clips of Dolph and Frank Langella to compare them with DUNE's character designs.

Bryan Singer, a good friend with Gary Goddard, quotes MOTU in a french GQ interview in regards to working with Oscar Isaac on X-MEN APOCALYPSE:
http://www.gqmagazine.fr/pop-culture/ci ... nger/37707

translation:
With Oscar Isaac we set up a "Skeletor scale", from the "Masters of the Universe" baddie, who was pretty intense in the "excited" mode (note: can't think of a good translation). To catch the mood of Apocalype at a specific moment I would tell Oscar "now you have to be 25% Skeletor" or "50% Skeletor". And when the shit hits the fan I just had to say "Full Skeletor"! We had a lot of fun, while still taking the character very seriously. It was important that Apocalypse had a human side. In the end his strongest power is persuasion.

Not movie related, here is a pretty good interview with Mark Taylor and his wife Rebecca about the origins of He-Man, illustrated by many rare concept arts 8)

John T. Atkin‎ to The 1987 Masters of the Universe Movie Fan Page
Fantastic screening of the "Masters of the Universe" film at the Carlton Cinema in Toronto this evening. The picture quality and sound were absolutely perfect. Lots of cheering and applause from the sold-out crowd (especially for Skeletor). Good times
