D was under used again though (as was my thought with Regeneration) and steals the show as he normally does. Only thing I would say though was that it was a little long!

I don't think a character like Scott can be used all the time for the types of films UNISOL are these days. To have Dolph doing this performance through the whole film would be at odds with the tone Hyams is going for. In an odd way, I think Dolph is used perfectly in this film.

Maybe your right here, I keep harking back to the first one and how Scott has changed, guess I am thinking a little older school with him rather than allowing myself to just go with the flow with the new stories.

It was perfect for the original film... that was much lighter and more 'fun' than the last two

Director John Hyams Takes ‘Universal Soldier’ in a Different Direction
7 Jan, 2013
By: Sean Viele

For the fourth installment of the “Universal Soldier” franchise, fans are sure to be in for something new. The blood, gore and action are still present, but the storyline in the new film strays from that of the previous three films.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment releases Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning on DVD ($26.99) and Blu-ray ($30.99) Jan. 22.

“The idea when I came upon this was to just try and do something different than what we did last time and take it in a very different direction,” said writer-director John Hyams. “So we just thought, well, let’s tell a story from a different perspective.”

The three previous films were told from the perspective of the government working to solve some outside problem. In the new film, Hyams said he wanted to tell the story from the universal soldier’s perspective with the government acting as a mysterious entity to make the film more of a “paranoid thriller” with elements of horror.

“The thought was let’s only know as much as our main character knows,” Hyams said. “Early on [in the film] you’re going to be very confused and then as it goes on, as [the protagonist] starts to understand what’s going on, [the audience is] going to understand more, and the mystery will start to unfold.”

The film opens with lead character John (Scott Adkins) witnessing the brutal murder of his wife and young daughter. From there, the audience is pummeled with fistful after fistful of death and carnage.

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning also brings back Dolph Lundgren as Andrew Scott and Jean-Claude Van Damme as Luc Deveraux, both of whom starred in the first film, which was released in 1992.

“I’m very pleased with the end result,” Hyams said. “This is low-budget filmmaking. These are smaller budgets so you kind of have to make the budget be appropriate to the movie you’re doing. That sort of fed into the idea of making it more of a horror-noir type of thriller.”

“[The film] seems to be getting a great reaction; people either love it, or some people violently hate it, and I like that too,” he said.

Bonus materials on the Blu-ray and DVD feature commentary with Lundgren and Hyams, plus three behind-the-scenes featurettes.

Sony will be pushing the BD/DVD release in the coming weeks...

UK, French and German (uncut edition) feature the UNCUT version (which is the director's cut), not only for more carnage but also more uncensored sex...

The U.S. edition is supposed to be uncut as well (according to Hyams a few months ago) but it has yet to be confirmed because the cover has the R logo... But it sure has the best special features with the audio commentary and in-depth 3 parts making-of documentary (European editions only have the official EPK interviews).

EDIT:
Read comments below (Sony came back on their decision to release the uncut version)

Therefore one has to get the U.S. edition for the special features and a European one for the UNCUT version...

In terms of Blu-rays (not theatrical) there's Germany (out now in rental and 1/25 for sale) and Australia plus UK (but only from HMV) so far...

U.S. review

I originally had the privilege of watching this film in 3D and it really is the way to watch this film, without it you lose a lot of the added depth especially in the first half of the film. The 2D version still is decent but I honestly wouldn’t recommend it. Unfortunately, there is no 3D US Blu-ray release planned by Sony. I watched it via VOD on DirecTV, so if you can catch it there, I would! Also there is an NC-17 cut of the film, which is also not on this Blu-ray release. I am not sure why Sony missed the mark on both of these great aspects of the film, it would have made this quite more desirable to purchase. I would just put this Blu-ray now as a renter.

The release looks sharp with its 1080p transfer and watch out for the strobe light scenes (which look better in 3D, sorry I will stop now). The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track really comes in great for the second half of the film, where the action is amped up. The special features are not jam-packed but overall decent. There is a nice audio commentary track from the director John Hyams and Dolph Lundgren. Besides the commentary, there are also three behind-the-scenes featurettes. The first is called “Coming Into Focus”, which takes a look at the production, it’s challenges and the films characters. “There Is No End” is a look at the tools used to create the final scene. Lastly “Production Wrap” is an in-depth look on the last days on set with cast/crew.

But hang on... Hyams has recorded a coommentary for the US version... surely he knew it was the cut version? At least we know why the commentary isn't on a lot of the european editions; the commentary doesn't fit the uncut runtime, I guess.

I hope the HMV steelbook has different art...

Good point but you know commentaries are still edited sometimes, you wouldn't notice, or he hasn't noticed the cuts while recording it with Dolph because paying attention to something else (the cuts are being quick) ; or they had them do the commentary on a master of the cut version while assuring the disc would be the uncut version... I don't question Hyams honesty about this, while Sony has a history of screw ups like this.

I have do admit, it seems like he has been hoodwinked by sony... it's possible he simply didn't realise; there are no additional scenes in the unrated, am I right? Just uncut frames?
