the comic chemistry between Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Terry Crews, Randy Couture and especially Dolph Lundgren, who gets some of the funniest scenes, really makes the movie what it is.

The Expendables 2 is imposingly violent, dramatically clunky, and more than a bit cynically conceived — and, despite all of that, it’s also shamelessly entertaining. Improving on the first film but still hopelessly barbaric in its attitudes, this sequel once again casts Sylvester Stallone and his band of greying or forgotten action stars as a merciless team of mercenaries who kill everything in sight, although there are few things they mangle as badly as their woefully hokey dialogue. Nonetheless, The Expendables 2 delivers the goods with such a brazen confidence that its clear flaws end up feeling more like adorable quirks.
Dolph Lundgren and Terry Crews are both given more to do this time around, and they both score some big laughs simply by being natural and relaxed.
Managing the complexity of stunts, aircraft and vehicle pileups and frequent shootouts that comprise the majority of the running time is a major challenge that West executes with elan, even adding unexpected grace notes to some otherwise routine scenes. Abetted by cinematographer and action-adventure specialist Shelly Johnson, whose camera placement and movement are spot-on, the action choreography never disappoints. Numerous gunfights, combat set pieces and fight scenes are muscularly staged and skillfully supported by Todd E. Miller’s editing, though the sheer sound volume grows repetitive and wearying.
Lundgren gets great comic mileage out of Gunner’s lunkheaded character, while Couture and Crews hold down the stalwart combat veterans’ shtick.
LIONSGATE RECORDS RELEASES SCORE ALBUM FOR "THE EXPENDABLES 2"
ORIGINAL SCORE BY BRIAN TYLER
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Aug. 14, 2012 /CNW/ - LIONSGATE® (NYSE: LGF) Records is proud to announce today's release of "The Expendables 2: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack," with music by Brian Tyler. The Expendables are back for a bigger and badder installment of the box office smash hit, and renowned composer Brian Tyler again does them proud with a pulse-pounding score. The star-studded film hits theatres August 17th, and the album will be available exclusively through iTunes today, Tuesday, August 14th.
Tyler describes his experience composing for the film, "I'm so thrilled to continue the musical journey I started on the first chapter of THE EXPENDABLES. Back with a vengeance, THE EXPENDABLES 2 called for an epic approach to the music to complement the narrative. Combining world percussion and dark electronic elements with an orchestral landscape allowed me to capture the essence of the renegade expendables spirit."
"Brian wrote another inspired score for THE EXPENDABLES 2," notes Tracy McKnight, Head of Film Music for Lionsgate, "He effortlessly blended electronic beats, percussion, and an orchestra to make a perfect accompaniment to this epic film. We are so glad to be adding this album to our family of Lionsgate soundtrack releases."
