Seems like Dolph as no luck with directors and producers, i think The Last Warrior and Agent Red had the same problem with budget and director and producer not gettin along or disagree with eachother on stuff for the movie.

I just watched this on Showtime HD channel. It is not Dolph's worst movie. The main problem is the low budget.
I think this is the best Dolph has looked since being older though. He is in very good shape and his hair looks cool.

How and why did this sit on the shelf for over four years I still don't know... And why First Look suddenly decided to release it, I don't know either... Perhaps to bank on the upcoming release (at the time of course) of Direct Contact...

Because it went to various distributors, Warner Home Video being originally supposed to release it.

Well, I can see why Warner decided to pass on it... Of course it would've been cool to see Dolph headlining a film produced by Warner Bros. That'd be a first since 1987's Masters of the Universe.

Warner didn't released MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE theatrically (Cannon did), only in video. But SHOWDOWN IN LITTLE TOKYO really was produced and distributed by Warner Bros (unfortunately they only did a limited release in the US and DTV worldwide).

Well I just finished watching Retrograde for the first time a few minutes ago. Considering the budget it was given and the limited time for shooting and editing I thought it was pretty good. Obviously the special effects could have been better especially the helicopter scene and the ship blowing up but I wasn't bored by the story and Dolph looked great.
As a Wing Commander series fan It brought a smile to my face seeing props from the WC movie. It was actually nice to see the guns used in full affect instead of the 2-3 minute quick cuts in Wing Commander.
All in all I enjoyed it and will probably watch it again.

What exactly happened and went down with the distribution on this one?? It seems that it was dumped from distributor to distributor over the course of over four years... Warner Bros. apparently even having hold of it briefly... Is this the reason for it sitting on the shelf for so long before finally getting a quiet release?? And why the constant holdup? Was it because the film was... well... pretty bad??

Probably. But also in the meantime Franchise Pictures went under, and they had not totally secured the rights, in the US notably. And obviously you can't release a title while it goes from one company to another...
