It was first put on the US special edition from 2004 which I think just made it to the UK ( I believe you referred to the 1st UK special ed from 2001 which had a different audio commentary and behind the scenes footage)

There's a big twist that makes it quite different.

It's the original ending but people didn't like it in test screenings so they removed the twist and also went to reshoot the fight to make it longer...

Optimum UK have bought all of the rights to the Momentum back catalogue, which used the old Kinowelt German releases. However, Optimum are using Studio Canal dvds as reference now, which are generally the french editions of the films. Therefore, Cliffhanger UK is finally uncut and special edition, the first two Rambos have new extras, They Live is now a special edition, and of course Universal Soldier is now the French special edition (without DTS, mind). Other old Momentum titles might be worth checking out too.

Hope this helps!

I think it's worth picking up Geoff for your collection, the alternate ending is quite long, you can view in on youtube but it won't be good quality, I say just go for it at that price.

Before I buy this, I need to clear something up...

I read about this version of the UniSol DVD in a magazine some months ago. It was a R1 DVD which listed the extras shown on play.com - as well as a reputed commentary from Van Damme and Lundgren. Is this true? Does anyone know if Dolph did actually record a commentary for this film?

Try this link for help, DVDcompare is a godsend!

As I say, Optimum are twinned with Studio canal, so I would imagine it's the French version. If so, go for it! I am this week.

There is a commentary with Roland Emmerich, Dean Devlin, JCVD and Dolph but they were recorded separately and edited together so it sounds a lot like just interviews (as the ones that were made for the featurettes). Unfortunately we don't hear Dolph enough (as of course Emmerich and Devlin will do most of the talking and then JCVD). By the way for those who have the UK region 2 SE the commentary from Emmerich and Devlin was different in that one...

I have the old UK edition, but I;m planning on keeping both. Plus, the new version uses the theatrical poster as artwork.
