The Problem With Universal Soldier

Postby dolphage on 16 Jun 2007, 18:20

I love Uni Sol like a plant loves water BUT...
One thing gets on my nerves:
Dolph (being Dolph) would wipe his ace with Van Damme any day of the week AND he injects "muscle enhancers" all through the movie. Van Damme takes ONE shot of the stuff and proceeds to beat the Dolpharino like he was his dad!
WTF?
It upsets me everytime!

Well... because Van Damme plays the main character and usually (if it's not a drama) the main character wins even against all odds?

Van Damme is NOT the main character of Universal Soldier, Dolph is the main character of Universal Soldier!

Van Damme is the comedy sidekick!

Edit: spelling

Spamming for what?

What am trying to promote?

What am I selling?

Try looking up what a spammer does.

Obviously, Jean Claude Van Damme is the main character of Uni Sol! I don´t actually beleive he is the comedy sidekick of the movie!

Jesus!

I feel like I´m in the movie: "Deliverance". Are you (bomaz) and Mosquito related and/or married?

Yes, I am a "comedian", if you, by that, mean that I am joking when I take the glaring improbabilities of Universal Soldier so extremely seriously.

Don´t get me wrong, it´s still not logical that JCVD could kick Dolph´s anus like that after just one shot of "muscle enhancer", but I don´t lose sleep over it. Much.

I´m 95% sure that bomaz is either a spammer or a cast member of the movie "Deliverance".

I´m 95% sure that I would have stayed on topic if I wouldn´t have been accused of being a spammer.

It looks very good! I like the drawing style. The cover is a bit disappointing though. I think it should be comic style, too, not a still shot from the movie.

Which one is the censored version? The "Newsstand" version?

The censored version is the one with the movie pics covers, the "bloody" version have comic style covers...

Jox wrote:Just too bad they didn't use movie footage from their other movies, nor karate pics I helped them to get, and neither the Cannes Festival footage. They even re-made a cheap CGI animation to look like the Rocky IV boxing gloves punching each other... nice featurette though... The other interesting special feature is the original ending that was shot and intended...

Here's some archive footage from French TV covering VD's presence at Cannes in 1992, it shows a bit of Dolph and VD going off on each other to promote the film...

I really would like to know what they were thinking when they were playing that little confrontation. Did they have fun? Did they think "Let's see how the media digs this" or "That will bring an extra 10.000 purchases"? I think it must be fun to fool such a big live audience and all the media.

PS: Or did they come up with that promotion story because they don't want to admit that it was for real? I don't think so, but you never know.

some French movie magazine said it was kind of both but that Van Damme and Dolph had a little disagreement about the US editing in which VD would have had his input (which he often had in his earlier films)...

About the Cannes incident;
I saw an inteview with Dolph a couple of years after the fact (about 1995) in wich they asked about that. The interviewer asked what it had all been about and Dolph really didn´t want to give too much of a straight answer and just went:
"Oh, that! Well, you know, that was just a.. little thing.. uh..."
and the interviewer went:
"A little publicity stunt?"
and Dolph, kind of reluctantly, went:
"Uh.. well.. yeah...".
Then the interviewer said:
"So would you have taken him?"
and Dolph said:
"Of course! I´m a viking, aren´t I?!"

And that last part is important to remember. Van Damme is allright (for a girl) but Dolph Lundgren is fckng Dolph fckng Lundgren (fckng)!

Anyway,

I beleive I have heard him make references to the incident as an "Ali vs. Frazier moment". And those "moments" were stunts to draw attention to the fights.
