This was fun, Sean!

MOTU rewriter Stephen Tolkin on Stan Lee (with whom he had worked on Pyun's CAPTAIN AMERICA and Cannon / 21st Century's aborted SPIDER-MAN):
I had the extraordinary luck, honor and privilege to work with Stan Lee on a couple of projects in in the 80's. He was the definition of gentleman -- gallant, gracious, generous, with a twinkle in his eye that was equal parts self-deprecating jest and big pride in who he was and the universe he had helped to create. When I directed my first movie I wanted to plaster the walls of a character's room with Spiderman images. HBO and the producers said no way, it would never happen, Marvel would barely even take their call, so please stop asking and come up with a substitute. I hadn't been in touch with Stan for a few years but since there is no substitute for Spiderman I took a deep breath, called the great man and asked the big favor, and within an hour HBO got a call from somebody at Marvel saying this is crazy but we're supposed to give you carte blanche for anything you want. However much I thanked Stan at the time couldn't have been enough, so -- thank you, Stan, for a roomful of Spidey and for everything you gave the world. There will not be another like you.

I remember that in order to get paid by Cannon you had to hold all those scripts hostage, not releasing them until a messenger came with a check.

1984 character concepts by Claudio Mazolli. That was 2 years before Ed Pressman, producer from day 1, tapped Cannon Films to co-produce and finance.

These are featured in the ART OF HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE book (Dark Horse, 2015).
