I think, on balance, that trolling and trashing culture is more prevalent - and can be much more vicious - in the US than elsewhere; certainly it is rarely as bad in Canada right next door. It's partly a facet of the ongoing 'culture wars' where the shrill wrath of self-styled 'Social Justice Warriors' (sic..) knows no bounds and who view those who oppose them as not merely wrong but actually evil. This has debased almost all debate across the US internet - and the virus is spreading globally.
But in this particular case, there is the distinct air of a feeding frenzy among trolls - all lining up to bash the '87 movie - because it shows how cool and sophisticated and superior in taste they are: virtue-signalling is a way of life among these people; broad-minded appreciation is not. And keyboard warriors have rarely if ever taken part in an actual fight.....
And, alas, the negative reports on Gary Goddard of late - though unsubstantiated at law - have done little to change outlook towards greater constructive criticism and enlightenment with regard to the film.
That said, there are hundreds of thousands of posts out there praising it and stating open enjoyment of it and in the opinion of significant numbers of reviewers and film-afficionados, the '87 movie is more popular now than it has ever been, achieving enduring cult - almost mythical - status.
What are a few trolls, each in danger of falling off their egos and landing on their IQs, to set against that..?
