Masters of the Universe - A Symphony - by Bill Conti

A full-scale symphonic treatment of his own film score by the composer - rarely-heard, but impressive!

It sounds like it's an edit of the released soundtrack...

I believe it's Bill Conti's own edit, given a full-scale symphonic treatment.

It was - so I'm told - performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic at its WDCH home in 2017.

I just find it odd because the sound and the orchestration seem identical to the soundtrack album (which is rarely if not ever the case for live performances), not to mention the doubtful fact that Bill Conti's entire MOTU score would have been played the Walt Disney Concert Hall in 2017 (which I can't find online, not anything about any of Bill Conti's music at WDCH)...

I've listened to it again - and I think that you are right about it being an edit.
Also, I can't find any reference with the LA Phil to the piece either.

I've written to my informant (who is in LA) to ask, but still no reply....

Something I didn't know was brought to my attention, William Dear (HARRY AND THE HENDERSONS, unmade ROCKETEER and STRETCH ARMSTRONG projects) was approached to direct MASTERS at one point:
"I was a little leery of a project that originated in concept with a toy. I had been attached loosely to Masters of the Universe before it was made. That was kind of scary because the story was driven by a promotion of a toy. I think that kind of lingered."

Also on another note:
On directorial freedom:
–Golan believed in complete artistic freedom, Globus, generally speaking, did not. On MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, spiraling out-of-control budgets and weak dailies made Globus want to fire director Gary Goddard. Golan refused ("I have never fired a director."). Of course, the film ended up being a terrible flop and another nail in Cannon's coffin, but Golan still stands by the decision.
