RED SCORPION : THE WAR BEHIND THE SCENES
https://www.midnightpulp.com/red-scorpi ... he-scenes/

This is a much simplified story of what happened behind the scenes. Unbeknown to most, Joseph Zito was not the first director hired to helm RED SCORPION, Duwayne Dunham was (he edited RETURN OF THE JEDI, BLUE VELVET, WILT AT HEART and directed LITTLE GIANTS and episodes of TWIN PEAKS)...

That's pretty outrageous stuff! I would love to hear everyone's take on the VHS sequel that followed.

5 years ago, the first special edition for a Dolph starring vehicle was released.

The Synapse Films edition has more content than Arrow Video's released a few months earlier that just had the commentary, interviews with Dolph and the composer Jay Chattaway:
Interview with Producer Jack Abramoff
Interview with Make-Up Effects Artist Tom Savini
Rare Original On-Set Behind-the-Scenes Video Footage
Animated Still Gallery
Liner Notes on the Making of RED SCORPION by Jérémie Damoiseau
TV Spots

That was 5 years ago? Yikes, time is really slipping into the future.

Oh well, to this day it's an awesome disc.

Happy birthday to composer Jay Chattaway!

His score is very underrated, and it's lucky it had a soundtrack album, probably thanks to the fact that Warner Bros was the initial distributor, there it was seemingly gonna have a better release when the deal was made with Varèse Sarabande...

Nameless Media partnered with Splendid Films to release new Mediabook and hard cover editions of RED SCORPION (no extras, and probably still very expensive)

And Splendid is re-realising a standard Amaray version with the original poster artwork

Great show guys!

I enjoyed some of the local insights about TV runs, VHS, dubbing over swearing...

Some trivia, I would like to add to complete some of your observations:

- the M. Emmet Walsh character was initially written as an American soldier or mercenary (have to re-read the script draft I have)

- the original ending, which I don't remember if it was filmed or not, showed Nikolai and the bushman going / running away together against the sunset

- there was plenty of footage left on the cutting room floor (Zito had shot a LOT), notably more scenes with Brion James' character, Nikolai getting hunted by big hyenas (one of which caused him trouble and bite him during the shoot), more with the Cubans and the rebels, battle scene stuff, and more... There's been plenty of conflicts on the production, and the final cut was also one of them (there may even have been legal actions between the producers, Zito, etc...)

A few pics of deleted scenes here:

PS:
Regarding the US theatrical release, it was still amazing in some way that Shapiro Glickenhaus was able to put it out on 1,200+ screens (about the same as MASTERS and I COME IN PEACE). And apart from taking too long to come out, right before the Berlin wall collapsing, the big flaw was that the company barely (or at all) advertised the movie. And Dolph, who was wrapping DARK ANGEL in Houston, did not make any publicity for it which reportedly was a conscious decision he made back then to distance from the film (the only place he really promoted it was in Japan earlier that year)...

PS 2:
Thanks for referring to my booklet liner notes a couple of times! At least two people read them...
