It wasn't as good as its ambitions but it sure was attempting something. Its exotic flavor (the score, color palette, the tone etc) and all the Hitchcock references make it quite likable i my opinion, it's kind of a cinematographic UFO.

Here's the Main Title track for COVER-UP from the composer Bruno Louchouarn's website!

(wish he'd put the End Titles theme which is quite unusually atmospherical and beautiful for a DL flick)

It seems like you don't actually enjoy that much of Dolph's work at all. Very odd.

I like Cover Up. It's an enjoyable dramatic thriller from a time before it was required that the main character instantly knows how to kick people's asses... a pre-Bourne time.

The coloring of the film was something that always perturbed me... It had this look of being a made-for-tv production on BBC, ala like one of those odd Sherlock Holmes flicks... Jox, would you know why this was? Low-budget? A European production?

I can't say because I'm not even sure why you're saying that (unless you saw it on a poorly mastered version). What's for sure and that most people don't realize is that you don't get the same light all around the world so of course you'll never get the same lighting wether you shoot in Southern California, Bulgaria, Paris or Israel like that's the case here... Now take into account the DP was Israeli and that the director wanted a particular look and was very much influenced by Hitchcock. The budget was around $7 million, same as DARK ANGEL / I COME IN PEACE so nothing particular low, and average for Dolph's movies at that time.

It doesn't look cheap as such, having seen the excellent widescreen version, however the widely seen pan and scan version is poorly framed and doesn't help the movie.

Which one? The only widescreen version I know of is the German edition from Highlight Film and it's not looking great color and definition-wise.

I meant it doesn't look TV quality. The image isn't tip-top, but the framing is correct... the pan-and-scan is bad. Joshua tree also had an awful 4:3 conversion. I

The versions that I saw were the standard VHS release put out by Live Entertainment in the '90's and the later DVD release put out by Artisan Entertainment...

It amazes me that back in the '90's videocassettes cost almost $100 for a new release...

This is the price for rental video stores (since they were making money out of rentals).

But in the early 80s, retail video cassettes (which weren't as common and systematically released) could easily be $150-175 (1000 francs), at least in France.

The german DVD is the best so far, is that it ? I'm trying to complete my collection but my cover up dvd is a crappy bootleg version. So it leaves me the choice with a french legit copy, a UK dvd and the german edition (in 1.77).
Which is the best ?
