Writer Chris Millis:
The amazing Amanda Plummer plays "Ma Balls" -- mother of "Tommy Balls" (Johnny Knoxville) -- in "Small Apartments."

In their scene together in Tommy's apartment, Ma Balls's dialogue is peppered with references I picked up along the way in my real life. She refers to "the center of all vortexes," which I witnessed in person in Sedona, AZ (it's a butte that apparently channels alien energy like an antennae).

In alarm, she hollers out, "Great Gatsby!" ... Remarkably, I needed to explain this reference to some crew who were confused by it.

And at one point, Ma Balls makes a peculiar anatomical reference that brings a heartwarming moment to a screeching halt.

Between shots, Plummer would locate the nearest corner or alcove to go off alone for a smoke.

I remember a camera assistant doing a literal double-take when Plummer performed her scene with Matt Lucas in front of the apartment complex where we were filming. His look said, "Whoa, there's a real actress on set today."

As far as I'm concerned, not enough can be said about the genius director of "Small Apartments," my dear friend, Jonas Akerlund.

Image

Jonas is Swiss, a visual and editing superstar, and best known for his iconic music videos that range from Prodigy to the Black Eyed Peas to Madonna, to Lady Gaga -- to everyone else who has ever picked up a guitar or stood at a microphone. You can't go anywhere with Jonas without him being called over by the biggest stars in film and music -- all unabashed fans of his work. They guy has got three Grammys for God's sake!

Plain and simple, "Small Apartments" would have never been made without Jonas. It was the trust in his leadership, his vision for the film, his ability to deliver a top-quality feature film on such a short shoot and limited budget, and his unflagging work ethic that powered our little movie through to completion.

Jonas never sleeps. I regularly get emails from him between midnight and dawn. He surrounds himself with talented, tireless people and then demands they contribute and keep pace with the workload. He leads by out-working everyone around him until they either rise to the challenge, or collapse by the side of the road, an empty husk of the person they once were.

I like to think I rose to the challenge, writing through pre-production and on set, all day, every day of "Small Apartments." It was easily the most satisfying work of my career thus far.

And that, above all, is why I will always be grateful and fiercely loyal to Jonas. Jonas gave me the gift of making me an integral part of the crafting of the film. I know it is a better movie -- the best possible story -- because we worked together on it as a team.

Of course, if I had not worked so hard every day on the set of my film, I would've been curled into a fetal ball in the corner of a bathroom somewhere in Hollywood.

But because Jonas is such a selfless artist and intelligent filmmaker, we collaborated on a work of art that will now make its way in the world for years to come. Something we, and everyone else who contributed to its uniqueness, can always be proud of.

The March 1 Saratoga Springs Premiere at the Saratoga Music Hall is approaching fast. As of now, half the room has been reserved in pre-sale tickets. DON'T BE LEFT OUT of this hometown party with a few hundred of your friends and neighbors. Reserve your seats here:

I think Chris Millis will find that his "dear friend" is Swedish, not Swiss.

That's right, I didn't notice!
I think it might just be a typo due to the importance of Switzerland in the story of SMALL APARTMENTS though...

Random fact; Akerlund used to be the drummer in seminal Black Metal band Bathory in the mid-eighties... his stage name? Vans McBurger.

Maybe, even though it's surprisingly common mistake. I'm used to it.

There's actually a good point made about the confusion between the two in the movie!

I received the DVD and watched it this morning as I'm sick. It's really quite good and endearing, very likable misfits characters, quality "mise en scène" and cinematography by Jonas Akerlund and his DP (L.A. shot like you've rarely seen it), all supported by a very good score and soundtrack by Per Gessle ("Roxette")! And yeah, do I need to add that Dolph is awesome (kind of reminiscent of Patrick Swayze's role in DONNIE DARKO)?!

Chris Millis wrote Small Apartments in 3 days. And it was published. And turned into a film.

Billy Crystal turns in his best performance in years as a worn-down fire investigator, while Dolph Lundgren turns in a rare comedy performance that is a lot of fun.
