Berlin buzz: market titles
As Berlin’s European Film Market kicks off, Screen looks at the hottest market debuts — at all stages of production — being offered by US, UK and European sellers

Bleiberg Entertainment has Dolph Lundgren attached to star in sci-fi actioner Battle Of The Damned, which will shoot in Malaysia and Singapore from June. The company’s slate also includes thriller Don’t Shoot The Piano Player, starring Vincent Gallo.

Today's Berlin daily of HOLLYWOOD REPORTER has a one-page ad for BOTD with the mention "IN PRE-PRODUCTION - FILMING BEGINS JUNE 2012" (page 33)

As long as the effects aren't too bad and the script doesn't take itself too seriously, then I think this could be okay. They need to put all the money possible into the film, and not keep cheapening everything as they go like Retrograde did. That film could and should have been so much better but in the end they spent barely anything on it. It was supposed to have snow bike chases etc but didn't.

But yeah, I'm actually looking forward to this a little. The story is brilliantly ludicrous and above all Dolph in the lead role is becoming something of a rarity these days, so I intend to enjoy it. The key, is to make this fun. In The Name Of The King was insanely boring. It tried to be funny but was poorly written so we can't afford that again.

Hopefully 1-2 decent co-stars too.

What’s not to love in this sci-fi horror combo from Bleiberg Entertainment? You’ve got you army of zombies, you’ve got your ragtag band of rebel robot and you’ve got the Dolph. And the title screams quality. The plot? Do you care? Something about Lundgren leading the robots to fight the zombies. Or something.

I first thought it was polished but it's the same, if you replace Dolph instead of the guy, it could actually be cooler than it seems and quite gritty and bloody...

Doesn't look too bad style wise, if they end up shooting like that in the film. The FX aren't brilliant, but also not as terrible as some films in that budget region.

No but it shouldn't be long.

Dolph starts shooting tomorrow.

Here's from his new site greeting:
Hi from Singapore!

I'm here getting ready to start shooting MAX GATLING: BATTLE OF THE DAMNED. This time I'm up against virus-infected human zombies, 'Eaters' as we call them. Max is sent into an infected, abandoned city to find a the daughter of a rich industrialist. He gets more than he bargained for. 'I wish I would've asked for more money', in Max's own words. Fortunately I enlist some kick-ass, run-away robots to help me in the battle.

Jox, who is the responsible production/distribution company for this? And is the budget on the same level as OITC and such like?

A company called Bleiberg Entertainment and their 'Compound B' label in association a production company from Singapore, Boku Films. I have no idea what the budget is (nor am sure about the OITC one) but it's like on the same level as most DL movies, unless they actually raised more money for this which is what it needs to actually match its ambitions...
