I think Gianni Capaldi, or maybe more likely, Daniel Bonjeour must have written this! ;)

I'm speechless after reading that review and wonder if even Capaldi himself could say some of those things without cringing horribly. You could take every single word in that review, write the word's opposite and then you'd have an accurate depiction of this total turd. A plot so beautifully woven it's almost like someone's grandma has swallowed her ball of wool and then shit it out and filming techniques that are so crisp, fluid and expensive looking, that you'd easily mistake it for a dog's excrement wrapped in a paper bag. And I thought words couldn't describe how bad this was...

It's really not that bad, ut it's like two different movies into one, and the Dolph vs Randy flick should be the main flick.

That review is funny.

Jox is right, it's not really that it's a bad movie, but it's like 2 different movies unrelated to each other and Dolph and Randy's characters don't get enough time to make anything of.

Region A (U.S.) edition review with image/sound and screenshots
(confirming the cinemascope 2.35:1 aspect ratio which must serve the locations and the lack of budget of the film much better).

I don’t understand why everyone is giving this film a hard time, have you seen a Dolph movie the last ten years? This is a step up, if the quality of his films stays at this I’m happy, but it’s more likely go back to SAF3 and Stash House type of films.

You guys must be insane. This is easily Dolph's worst since In the Name of the King II, everything about it is utterly poor and sub-standard, the only saving graces are Dolph's acting, (which we get to see for about ten minutes out of ninety) and the fight between him and Randy. Everything else is irritatingly bad beyond belief.

Video Quality

Ambushed features a rather standard HD video-sourced Blu-ray transfer. Generally, the image is fine, offering well-defined details and bold colors. Clothing and facial lines appear nicely textured, while the image picks up a good bit of accurate detailing on city building exteriors, rusty iron fire escapes, and other odds-and-ends that reveal prominent visual elements. The color palette enjoys a good bit of diversity, from natural greens to blue-dyed hair. Colors are fairly bold and even across the board. Flesh tones appear accurate, and black levels are notably deep and honest. The image does suffer from an overall flatness that's not uncommon to lower budget HD video pictures. The image also reveals some intermittent aliasing, which is particularly severe in some of the more heavily processed establishing shots. Light banding and noise and a few smeary edges are also evident. Overall, however, the pluses far outweigh the minuses and help define a fairly average but nevertheless enjoyable HD image.

Ambushed Blu-ray, Audio Quality 4.0 of 5

Ambushed arrives on Blu-ray with an enjoyable and well-engineered Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless soundtrack. Certainly, there's nothing remarkable here, but everything appears in place and the track proves suitably dynamic and even. Musical notes, particularly the robust Hip-Hop beats that open the movie, enjoy generous spacing, honest surround support, deep supportive bass, and excellent clarity. Action effects, too, share those same qualities; gunshots in particular ring out with a fair bit of oomph and accuracy. Background ambient effects help to pull the listener into the film, whether well-defined street-level city atmosphere or the background din inside a crowded bar. Dialogue plays accurately and evenly from the center channel. This is a solid all-around performer from Anchor Bay.

Special Features and Extras 1.0 of 5

Ambushed contains one supplement. Behind the Scenes: AMBUSHED (HD, 15:02) takes a look at the Lundgren-Couture dynamic on screen and off, Vinnie Jones' part in the film, the Frank and Eddie portions of the story, Giorgio Serafini's direction, the picture's style and genre, favorite scenes, character traits, actor influences, and more. The filmmakers acknowledge it's meant more as a fun, escapist film rather than an original work of art. A DVD copy is also included in the case.

That may be why the version featured on the U.S. Blu-ray features has different interviews (than the one posted here) that have been re-shot with Dolph, Vinnie, Serafini and Gianni (during A CERTAIN JUSTICE I suspect, considering the change of hair)

Video
Ambushed is presented in an aspect ratio of 2.35:1. The 1080p image is arrived at with an AVC MPEG-4 codec at an average of 23 mbps. Director Giorgio Serafini employs a lot of visual tricks — split screens; different filters; high-contrast shots in the L.A. sun — to liven up his familiar crime story. Fortunately, this Anchor Bay Blu-ray does an exceptional job of presenting them clearly and faithfully. A good portion of the action takes place either at night or in Frank’s darkened night club, and the black levels are appropriately deep and feature solid separation. Close-ups also reveal an impressive amount of detail on the actor’s clothes and faces (particularly Lundgren and Couture’s weathered mugs). Some of the establishing shots, however, look noticeably worse than the rest of the film, possibly due to aliasing. That’s the only big hiccup in what is a strong HD presentation of a low-budget action flick that has a lot going on from a visual standpoint.

Audio
The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track is generally as aggressive as you’d expect from a low-budget action flick starring a couple of Expendables. The hip hop-flavored songs are particularly (and overly) strong when used for scene transitions, but at least they give your subs a good workout. In contrast, the track has a subtle sense of immersion, at least when the action moves outside to the streets of downtown L.A. Not surprisingly, the entire sound field explodes to life whenever there’s gun fire (with sound traveling well from one speaker to another), and the track does a solid job with the dialogue, which is trickier than it sounds thanks to the variety of accents on display.

Special Features
Behind the Scenes — Ambushed: (15:02) The director and his cast discuss the project, and we get a peek at on-the-set footage. Lundgren talks about liking the idea of going head-to-head with Couture on film, while a producer curiously refers to Frank and Eddie as “supporting characters.” (I guess they have to keep pushing the agenda that this movie is about Lundgren, Couture and Jones’ characters.) Anyway, the director also pops in to reiterate the idea of downtown Los Angeles as a character and confirm his love of ’80s action movies.

Final Thoughts
Ambushed is also known as Hard Rush, which is somehow an even more awful and generic title.

Whatever you want to call the movie, it’s worth a look if have 97 minutes to kill and you want to watch a violent, entertaining crime drama that reminds you of the great crime dramas you already love. Just don’t pick this one up expecting Lundgren, Couture or Jones to be the stars of the show.
