Documentary lifts lid on the chaos, craziness around 1980s Cannon Films
http://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/fi ... nnon-films
Having snared prominent filmmakers Quentin Tarantino for Not Quite and John Landis for Machete Maidens, Hartley was determined to get Death Wish franchise and The Wicked Lady director Winner (who was also a restaurant critic for Britain's Sunday Times) to be his guide for what is now called Electric Boogaloo (the name coming from Cannon's ill conceived sequel to hit dance movie Breakin').

"I'd read his fantastic biography Winner Takes All and he was such a large part of Cannon, so outspoken and had such great stories."

But sadly it wasn't to be. Although Winner agreed to appear, financial problems meant that by the time Hartley was ready Winner was dead.

"That was a big shame."

However, there were plenty of other Cannon "stars" willing to talk, including Molly Ringwald, Richard Chamberlain, Bo Derek, Dolph Lundgren, Sybil Danning and Alex Winter. "Winter [eventually best known for starring opposite Keanu Reeves in the Bill and Ted films] certainly didn't hold back. It is always good when people speak their mind. He obviously didn't have a particularly good time in England on the set of Death Wish 3, which he only basically got because he had an English passport."

Hartley admits he was relieved to get so many of the Cannon crew, particularly when rumours that Golan and Globus were making their own "rival" documentary became reality.

"I'd been reading about them wanting to make their own documentary since Cannon was around and then, when we started lining up interviews once we'd got the finances in place, people kept telling us that they'd been approached by this other documentary."

While the only defector was veteran actor Jon Voight, what Golan and Globus did do that stifled Hartley was blocked him from getting any real archive material out of Israel from their early days. "Of course, people assume that their documentary [The Go-Go Boys] is the official one, but actually ours is because we licenced every single second of footage from MGM and Warners, who own all the rights to the films now."

And Hartley made sure he made liberal use of the footage. "You don't need to need to watch any Cannon Films after watching this because you've basically seen every single money shot."

When asked what best summed up the "Cannon way", Hartley suggests a deal Golan made with an unusual Hollywood star. "Listen, whether you think Menahem had any talent or not, there is no question that he ate, lived, slept and dreamt movies 24/7 and just wanted to keep making them and didn't want to let any kind of sanity get in the way of that. He was willing to sign the orangutan [Manis] from Every Which Way But Loose to a three-picture deal. But the monkey bit the lead child actor on the first day of the first film so he had to replace him – which he did, with a midget in a suit!"

Not on ELECTRIC BOOGALOO but on Cannon:
Our next question is from Bert Duckwall via Facebook;

Why did Cannon Pictures go under? ‪#‎AskCannon‬

Hi Bert, thank you for your question. The most common misconception about The Cannon Group Inc is that it went bankrupt (or 'went under'), whereas in fact it never did.

The Cannon Group inc, was renamed Pathe Communications by Giancarlo Parretti and out from this company was folded a new subsidary called Cannon Pictures. After Giancarlo Parretti and Yoram Globus left Pathe Communications to run MGM Studios, Christopher Pearce was put in charge of Cannon Pictures, which continued to amke and release films until the mid-1990's.

Giancarlo Parretti then defaulted on a loan repayment to the bank that had bankrolled his MGM take over, Credit Lyonnais. The bank took control of the studio and kicked him and Yoram off the board of directors, inserting Alan Ladd Jr in their place.

Now Credit Lyonnais was also the top lender to the independent film companies in Hollywood at the time. To their horror, MGM Studios was now not worth the over $1 billion they had lent out to buy it. So what they did was call in all their loans to the indpendent film studios, bankrupting companies such as Empire Pictures and 21st Century Film Corporation. They then folded these companies, along with what remained of Pathe Communications & Cannon Pictures into MGM Studio to increase MGM's value so they could sell it off and regain the money they had spent.

They didn't and MGM was sold at a loss and Credit Lyonnais was nationalized by the French Government.

i just watched Electric Boogaloo (got it from the $5 DVD bin at Wal Mart). It's pretty crazy how these guys ran the studio. Masters of The Universe has it's own segment. Too bad they only use about one minute of Dolph's interview in the movie.

Extras are surprisingly extensive and specific to each of the two features. For Electric Boogaloo we start off with a five minute press interview with director Mark Hartley where he talks about what inspired him to make the picture. Up next, there’s a Variety Studio interview that runs five minutes and sees Hartley alongside Brett Ratner, who served as co-producer, discussing their affections for Cannon and their thoughts on the project. Six minutes of footage shot at the feature’s Toronto International Film Festival debut is also found on the disc, as is a separate four minute interview with Frank Yablans.

Umbrella has also rescued a serious wealth of footage from the cutting room floor for this release. Fans of Michael Dudikoff will be excited to find the full thirteen minute version of his interview included here, as well as a massive selection of other deleted and extended scenes from the movie. There’s a lot of interesting stuff here, it’s thirty-seven minutes well spent.

Having said all of that, the best of the extras is the Cannon Films trailer reel that Umbrella has assembled. There’s a load of great stuff here – trailers are included for Inga, Innocence Lost, Joe, Maid In Sweden, Blood On Satan’s Claw, Hot T-Shirts, The Apple, Schizoid, The Happy Hooker Goes To Hollywood, Lady Chatterley’s Lover, Body And Soul, Enter The Ninja, That Championship Season, The Last American Virgin, Death Wish II, The Wicked Lady, Revenge Of The Ninja, Hercules, 10 To Midnight, Treasure Of The Four Crowns, Breakin’, Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo, Making The Grade, The Ambassaor, The Naked Face, Sword Of The Valiant, Bolero, Maria’s Lovers, Missing In Action, Missing In Action II, Mata Hari, The Adventures Of Hercules, Lifeforce, King Solomon’s Mines, Death Wish 3, American Warrior (better known as American Ninja), Invasion USA, Runaway Train, Firewalker, Alan Quartermain And The Lost City Of Gold, Invaders From Mars, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, The Delta Force, 52 Pickup, Cobra, American Ninja 2, Assassin, Street Smart, Superman IV: The Quest For Peace, Masters Of The Universe, Over The Top, Death Wish 4: The Crackdown, Tough Guys Don’t Dance, Alien From LA, Messenger Of Death, Salsa, American Ninja 3, Sinbad Of The Seven Seas, Kinjite: Forbidden Subjects, Cyborg and last but most certainly not least, Lambada (the forbidden dance!). A lot of this material was included on Umbrella’s Blu-ray release of Drive-In Delirium: Maximum ‘80’s Overdrive but it’s appropriate to include it here as well.

Aside from that, there’s also a trailer for Electric Boogaloo included here, as well as a pair of pretty extensive still gallery.

Actually took the time to watch this now. What a fantastic documentary.

I feel there's so much in there and such a wealth of interviewees that you could probably make a 10 part series about this and have enough material. Even each individual franchise bears so much note that you could make a separate documentary.

Canon is an odd one, because in principal a lot of the things they were trying to do were clever. They could make big looking movies for not much money. Sure they weren't the most stylish and the cinematography at that time was typically pretty flat anyway, but they were exciting.

That being said, I don't really like how they worked. They churned out a lot of crap. The majority of their films that I've seen have been reasonable but most of the titles in there I'd never even heard of.

Any time you think of Canon you think of Bronson and Norris but they were just the tentpole stars it seems. Thing is, I don't think they actually understood audiences and filmmaking. It's almost hard to believe that movies like Aliens, Top Gun, Platoon, Stand by Me and The Fly came out the same year as Chuck's Firewalker. It's almost like Coca Cola vs some terrible cheap rip-off that's inferior in every way.

Unfortunately the new Canon is arguably Millennium. Avi Lerner seems to have had most of Golan's outlook rubbed off on him. In fact I saw an interview with him walking around Cannes talking the same level of total crap about movies that people don't give a toss about, it actually could have been Menahem in the 80's at Cannes. That's why The Expendables isn't quite as good as it should have been.

Don't get me wrong, I actually really enjoy The Delta Force (both 1 and 2), Missing in Action trilogy, Death Wish 2-5, Murphy's Law, 10 til Midnight. I enjoy those movies. Yes they are flawed and if they were made by other studios they would have been better but they do all have something that only Canon could give them. A flavour, a cheesiness.

Sad that Bronson wasn't around for the documentary although apparently he was never the easiest person to interview. And sad that Chuck wasn't in the documentary.

But yeah, an odd tale about an odd studio that had they perhaps really honed in on their strengths instead of being so scattergun and manic, might have survived their own apocalypse.
