Well, I have also endured SHARK LAKE... And it's about what you'd expect. On the plus side, it is not as ugly as the Serafini films, and there are some great aerial shots of the lake and town. I imagine they're most likely stock footage shots, but they add a semblance of class to the film.
Unfortunately, that's about where my praise for the film ends. I'd hate to kick a dog when it's down, but the film takes itself way too seriously. Wanna do a serious shark movie, fine... But you need the appropriate budget to pull it off. Yet when the budget is as limited as it is here, you really have only one way to go, and that is the way of the SyFy Channel movies. Which is what this should have been. And as has been evidenced in other reviews, the film clearly doesn't know how to utilize Dolph. I understand that he can't always get the "meathead" roles, and that as an actor, he is always wanting to try something new. But come on... It's Dolph in a shark movie! The production team should have really done something with that. Instead it's Dolph coming in and out of the film for long stretches of time doing really nothing. Surprisingly, he's not in the film that much, I'd say 15 minutes tops. They clearly used him for the week he was on set and then padded his scenes throughout the film. And regarding his character, he's in it so little that the film could have been done without his character. He's not entirely integral to the story.
Other points of contention that are worthy of mentioning...
-- Yes, the special effects are pretty bad. CGI that's pretty amateur, but nothing worse than anything on SyFy... Watch out for the scene with the girl parasailing and missing a leg.
-- The scenes linger to the next without much fluidity. Clearly an amateur production; could have used some more work editing.
-- Dolph just appears bored. With these quick shoots, the one saving grace is he's at least been given unique characters that he gets to have fun with. Not here.
-- The film screams cheap. Police station, especially the sheriff's office, is clearly a set. Then again, quick and cheap seem to be the new standard with these dtv films, so that's to be expected I guess.
With LARCENY and DON'T KILL IT on the horizon, hopefully we'll have something more to look forward to. Hopefully.
