Clearly shot very quickly. Reminds me of the one take fight from the end of Escape Plan 3. Doesn't look like there's much action in HNF but at least Dolph isn't doubled visibly here. Nothing particularly imaginative though. Also, can they not have some punchier sound design? Not a spectacular movie but Rambo: Last Blood, you felt every slam in your bones. Even when Sly put a knife down on the table it vibrated your eardrums. These things help to upgrade films. I always tell my post-sound guys, make it sound like it fucking hurt.

Can’t wait to review it for The Action Elite site this Tuesday. Dolph looked like he was having a stroke in the amateur production that was Acceleration and The Tracker suffered from unconvincing supporting cast and having all the best stuff be in the last 20 minutes.

The interaction from the crew, the posters and premise all sound like an improvement tho.

EDIT:
Action Reloaded review

Dolph Lundgren returns to the screen with director Giorgio Serafini for the solid action thriller Hard Night Falling. I will have to admit I was thrilled when I read the synopsis, Dolphs previous effort ‘The Tracker’ was a weak action movie I started to have some doubts about this.

Going in… I hadn’t high expectations.. But I am pleased to report it is an entertaining action movie. Dolph is in the movie throughout and is kicking ass and shooting people quite frequently. The movie doesn’t slow its pace for filler, which is a joy.

Hard Night Falling sees Dolph do Die Hard while Under Siege. Though Dolph does get outshined by his co-star Natalie Burn who has some very impressive moments and gets all the best takedowns which I’m sure will have people impressed. The movie is familiar territory for Lundgren who has done this kind of movie before, for example, Command Performance.

This movie is typical B-movie fare and if you know what your getting when you go into it, you should have a good time with it. I was glad too see Dolph back on the screen punching people and not taking names.

EDIT:
I can't believe the movie was showing for 1 day 1 showtime only at the Laemmle's Royal Theatre in Los Angeles today at 10:30am and I missed it (I'm in LA)!

Just rented from Prime and Action Elite site review should be up shortly.

Long story short: it rocks despite budget limitations.

Hard Night Falling is indeed Die Hard in a mansion. Missing combinations, hostages executed one by one, it’s all there. Just on a much lower budget, to low for convincing explosions, unfortunately. At one point it looks like they used sparklers to simulate an off-screen blast. If your budget is that low, you’re probably better off just cutting the scene entirely. The film’s other big explosion is of the more traditional bad CGI variety.

There are some good action scenes in Hard Night Falling but there’s also several where it’s so dark I couldn’t tell what was going on. This is especially true in the final act. Dolph manages to call his team in to help him out and there’s plenty of outdoor scenes. Having to half-ass an explosion is bad. But not being able to afford lighting is something I expect from a shot in the backyard camcorder film, not a film headlining Dolph Lundgren. One starring Steven Segal, yes, Lundgren usually has higher standards though.

Unlike several of his recent films, Lundgren earns his star billing here. He is the star, not merely making an extended cameo. And that’s what saves Hard Night Falling. He handles his fight scenes well and does the best he can with some awful dialogue. He’s worked with writer Giorgio Serafini several times before. He’s written and/or directed four of his films, most notably on Blood Of Redemption. Director Giorgio Bruno’s credits are mostly as a producer and that might be what he wants to stick to.

While better than the likes of Acceleration and Female Fight Club, Hard Night Falling still never rises much above watchable. As much as I hate to say it if this is what he’s being offered now maybe Dolph should have let his major studio return with Aquaman and Creed II be his exit. I mean what better way to go out than a great return to the role that made him a star?

I do want to give a special shout-out to Sandro Di Stefano, the individual behind the music of Hard Night Falling. Besides Dolph’s performance, the only thing that helped keep my attention on the movie was the incredibly good score. Kudos to you, Sandro Di Stefano!
