'Hail, Caesar!': How the Coens Remade 1950s Hollywood
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/h ... ade-861252

Auds Give $11M To ‘Caesar’
Universal’s Hail, Caesar! getting lambasted by audiences with a C- CinemaScore and a lowly 66% ComScore PostTrak.

Currently Hail, Caesar! is the second highest grossing film on Friday and the weekend with $4.2M and $11M. Should those numbers stick, they’ll be coming in above the $10M that Uni was expecting for the Coen Brothers-directed film. Even though this wasn’t the Coens at their zenith (that was obvious from the movie’s release date which is far from the onset of awards season), critics took to Hail, Caesar! like cats to yarn giving it a 79% Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score. That was certainly a catalyst for business, particularly for an auteur film such as this. Fifty-percent of those polled by CinemaScore said that they came to watch Hail, Caesar! because it was a comedy, while 30% each cited the Coens and the male ensemble of Channing Tatum, George Clooney, Josh Brolin and Jonah Hill as the second and third reasons for attending. But once the audience got inside the theater, it was all downhill from there. PostTrak reports that a small portion of the audience at 40% wants to recommend Hail, Caesar! to their friends. “The Coens need to think about their next picture,” said one rival distribution insider tonight. Granted, the Coens’ fare is typically built for an arthouse platform release. They don’t often go wide. However, they’ve seen slightly better openings with previous star-studded, comedic fare, i.e. Burn After Reading ($19.1M), The Ladykillers ($12.6M) and Intolerable Cruelty ($12.5M). But with a cost of $22M, Uni might have the last laugh for Hail, Caesar! overseas as Burn After Reading made $103.4M abroad to $60.4M in U.S./Canada, and Intolerable Cruelty posted $85M foreign to $35.3M stateside.

This spring, Lundgren crosses over into another career-first when he pops up in Hail, Caesar!, an old-Hollywood caper directed by the Coen Brothers. “They were looking for a Russian character, as a matter of fact,” he says. “I guess they tried to get a Dolph Lundgren lookalike first but then they came to me and I was available. I didn’t want to do it because I thought I would be making too much fun of myself, but when I looked at the script it wasn’t like that. It’s a moment in the picture where they needed someone difficult-looking and kind of iconic to be in a situation. It was very quick, a two-day job. They have a lot of these roles in the picture. But for me, the biggest thing I walked away with was that it was so fun to work with those two guys and to meet some of the other actors like Channing Tatum. It was also shot in an interesting way: they shot it like a Hollywood picture from the ’40s or ’50s on 35 millimeter, with a lot of special lighting effects, the cameras quite static or on a dolly like in the old days. It was fun to see how they were so true to that process.”

Asked about it on the Berlin red carpet, the Coens say they only cut out Dolph for time, that they don't like to make long films (and maybe the scene it's gonna be on the DVD).

Could they not have cut something else! Pretty disrespectful to cut the majority of someone's role when they've been gracious enough to accept. I would be pretty pissed if I was Dolph - just saying.

Like I said they probably did cut other people, as most cameos are seemingly very short as is the movie for a cast this size so it's nothing personal. Remember, it's like big stars such Rachel Weisz and the likes doing big roles in a Terence Malick movie and getting completely erased or reduced to pieces (Sean Penn was pissed about TREE OF LIFE I believe)...
What's also a shame is that the scene was I believe the or one of the final scenes of the movie so that would have left people with an impression.

But yeah, the one time he gets a role from big time respectable acclaimed directors he gets "out of the picture"...

Oh yeah a lotta people got cut out of Thin Red Line. Adrian Brody was originally the main character then found out his role had been reduced to basically a background extra at the premiere that he was attending with his family. Must have been tough but he was fine. Dolph will be too. Besides getting them residuals!

Regardless, the Cohens lost out on getting my money at the box office.

Given the moody atmosphere of the sequence, Dolph's full scene could have been really cool and effective, maybe even more so had it been a surprise. Also in the final cut you could clearly see his face if the lighting wasn't so dark.

There were a few shots where there was a practical sub, so the art department built a sub set. Anytime you saw Channing Tatum climbing on the sub and Dolph Lundgren standing on top of the sub, that was all a real set. We had to extend that set digitally for some shots, in addition to the fully CG shots.
