I've never heard of this guy before this one was filmed and in the can. Now I see this?! Producer, actor / action star, and now singer? Is there anything this guy can't do? Wonder what other talents Gianni Capaldi has hidden up his sleeve...

Never heard of him or seen him anywhere either (even Johnny Messner whom I'd only seen in one or two small parts on TV but sure had no idea he was "starring" in action movies). But apparently Reese has got some fans if you look at his FB page, he made a few action DTVs since the late 2000s (ONE SHOT, OSOMBIE and THE ELEVENTH HOUR all also directed by John Lyde), all while making music as well...

I only know him from The Eleventh Hour. That was a good dtv action movie, in my opinion...

Funny how it doesn't even mention the real star of the movie.

I guess they demanded it since it was changed (but he's still not in the cover while in some versions they made him appear):

I find it fascinating that Universal of all companies is the US distributor for this one... Why? I imagine they're the ones who are distributing KINDERGARTEN COP 2 in a few months, but are they planning on using RIOT as a springboard of sorts for that one...?

I wouldn't call that a "springboard" and when majors pick up these DTVs it's usually with the attempt of a good release (remember STASH HOUSE at Warner) but I guess they figured having two new Dolph's on the shelves and online stores around the same time can always help one way or the other (maybe compensating for the potential action fans who might skipping KINDERGARTEN COP 2)?

Press release from Universal for the US edition:

(weird that they would release RIOT on BR and not KINDERGARTEN COP 2 by the way (unless they approach it like KC2 is a family movie and not the best target for BR buyers)

I've watched this again. I quite enjoyed it, but it still falls flat because of the lead. Had it been even Scott Adkins in the leading role this would have been one of the most enjoyable DTV's of recent years in my opinion. It's fast paced, nice and short, and the action is actually impressive. It's also fairly well shot too. It's just a shame the leading man hasn't got much presence.
That said, Matthew Reese is probably a blessing and a curse to this. Given that he also produced this and has obviously used this as a springboard to try and launch himself as a leading man, he's approached this film with genuine intent to make a decent action film. So who knows, had this been any old hack company doing it they might have had someone like Adkins in the lead but really half assed the film. As it is, possibly because of Reese himself, there's been some effort in this. It was quickly made, but it's not been simply churned out. They've at least attempted to make a kick ass action movie, which is more commendable than dross like Shark Lake or the Serafini films.

I agree it's fairly shot and the action very well staged for this kind of production, but the rest really isn't worth it and rather dull and stupid (not to say tasteless), badly written in a lot of ways so I wouldn't blame it on Reese being the lead. Action movies can be "shallow" but need something else to be either fun or enjoyable, and this is not to me (granted I also grew older but still).
