If I was running a film company I'd be ashamed to put something so lame up.

I agree it's quite hideous (especially with this font), but for film distribution sales at film markets it doesn't necessarily have an effect on sales, they even always have one, or throw names on black background.

And when they don't make any much effort is often when they don't need to because they already know it's a done deal or have sold most territories. Whereas the slickest market key art advertising are often for the shoddiest titles (hence the fun flyers for the really low budget exploitation flicks).

I know it can be hard to understand from our perspective, but good or bad strategy, the film markets mentality and practices work differently and methods of selling are not the same as to advertise a movie to the audience (that's why often the early promos don't work and shouldn't be shown to the public - I've seen the SKIN TRADE promo last year and it's best it didn't get online).

Screenplays are also shown although most of the times buyers don't read them unless they're not sure. And maybe we'll see a real updated key art in a few days in the Variety or Hollywood Reporter Cannes dailies (VMI took out their recent RIOT one to replace it soon I guess)...

Mike Mendez is right now directing a small gig with no other than .... Henry Rollins. :) A heist movie called "The Last Heist" produced by Rick Benattar (Real Still, Shoot'em up, ironclad ...).
That's nice.

It says it's under the SAG-AFTRA Modified Low Budget Agreement, which is for movies with production budgets under $700,000.

I guess nowadays DTV movies with budgets over even $1M are getting rare.

Like for SHARK LAKE (most are the same producers), we don't know what they told the casting agency, what this budget would include, how they put the financing together and make it appear officially to be in the SAG Low Budget agreement (remember there's lots of tricks in film production financing, when not scamming).

All those films have very low budget and it's become difficult to even make a $5 million film... STORM CATCHER, JILL RIPS, RETROGRADE were about the same (total cost of $2 milion, with about $1 million to make the film) and I'm sure most of the past projects (including WAR PIGS) didn't cost more...

That's true, though it wouldn't surprise me if the budgets were actually that low.

The director of the Sharknado movies was on the Adam Carolla Podcast recently and he said that the movies cost under a million and are filmed in 18 days, and those are pretty much the highest profile TV/DTV movies in recent years.

It's rough out there in the DTV land.

And not just DTV-land... But DTVs are first on the line and even cable TV doesn't seem to catch up with the DVD/BD/VOD sales. 16 years (time flies!), channels like HBO paid big deals money to premiere titles such as THE MINION, BRIDGE OF DRAGONS and STORM CATCHER, and these sales would count big time in their profits. (Today, there are two many networks, and even though getting TV sales is better than nothing, they don't seem to pay that much anymore.)

Plus like I said before, there's a new generation of writer/producers now who aren't as talented, smart and knowledgeable as they used to, and since it's a tough economy all they want is to have something done and sold to get their career move forward.

Oh, that can mean good (they're takingtime for some pre prod) or bad (they have trouble securing stuff).
If it's the first, then i'm happy it's still on his radar (and according to his Instagram, he seems to be shooting something in between KC2 and this).
