All he got in his first movie is crazy and still very suspicious (starring role in Warner Bros movie, producer credit, script rewrite, make-belief biography etc) and unclear as to how it happened... But yeah, I have no doubt he's always been very demanding financially (projects in the 90s started to fall through because of it) and managed to get very profitable deals.

The "official" story is that he was Mike Ovitz's Aikido instructor, who at that point was called the most powerful man in Hollywood because he was the top agent who made the best deals. Ovitz set up an aikido demonstration for all the Warner Bros executives, and since I guess aikido at that time was new and exotic like karate was in the 70's and 80's the executives were so impressed by the demonstration that they signed Seagal for a movie deal.

The "unofficial" rumour, which hasn't been validated, is that Mike Ovitz at the top of his power made a bet with a studio exec that he could make any unknown guy into a major movie star, even his aikido instructor, which is what he did.

But Seagal himself no doubt was trying to get into showbiz even earlier. He appeared on talk shows demonstrating aikido, much like Chuck Norris demoed Karate or Tang Soo Do on Johnny Carson in the 70's, he was a martial arts instructor in a couple of movies including that one Bond movie where he supposedly broke Sean Connery's wrist, and he was even married to a soap actress. There are pictures of Seagal attending Hollywood parties with her way before he became famous. He later married "up" and got together with Kelly LeBrock, a bigger star.

This is of course all after he abandoned his wife and kid in Japan when he returned to the US.

Yes but I think that there must be more than meets the eye behind these versions of the story, as with much of Seagal's life and career...

Could be, or maybe he's just a guy who came into the scene at the right time and got lucky. In the late 80's and early 90's it seemed that every studio was trying to manufacture their own action stars.

Jeff Speakman was a Kenpo Karate guy who only had a few bit parts under his belt when he got a starring role and top billing in Paramount's The Perfect Weapon in 1991.

That same year football star Brian Bosworth with zero acting experience also got a starring role and top billing in Michael Douglas produced Stone Cold released by Columbia.

Even at the indie level Roger Corman "discovered" Don The Dragon Wilson and cast him in his Bloodsport/Kickboxer ripoff Bloodfist and eventually had him under contract and they made like a dozen movies together and he became a big name in the video action market for a while.

Those guys were thought after because Van Damme and Seagal paved the way and "kickboxing" flicks seemed trendy, but I really do think there's more to Seagal's story (and not in a good way) and that was not just a "manufactured" star. Anyway...

Not very. Least not anymore. Maybe back in the 90's, and more so as a comedian; he never really attained leading man status. Since the 2000's he's mainly been in various sitcoms and reality shows. He did apparently coin the phrase "booty call", so he's got some other notoriety...

Yeah that's where I thought he came from so I meant in general cause I figured he wasn't famous for "his movies"... They almost seem to put him on equal foot with Dolph being on the cover, clearly naming him a cos-star on the back (and the trailer I think?) etc.

He's always been sort of a comic relief/sidekick casting and to be honest I'm not sure he had that great a following even when he was getting ok'ish roles back in the day. I'm sure his casting was to add extra comic relief in case the audience didn't buy Dolph in a funnyman role all by himself. Odd choice for casting imo though.

Amazon.de had the great idea to replace the KC2 DVD cover by KC1 to mislead people into buying the sequel...
