BLACK WATER (Allan Ungar; Pasha Patriki, 2018)

Postby thegoon4eto on 28 Dec 2016, 22:20

So, I saw this project at the Van Damme forum. And it had Dolph listed on it

http://safierent.com/?page_id=527

But appereantly now it's being made with Van Damme (shooting from mid-January to February).

So, looking at Dolph having some other pre-production projects, I guess he dropped out of this?

That doesn't mean much, even more so since Dolph's name has only been added on IMDB which anyone can do and we don't know if they're just trying to attract attention, if deals are finalised etc...

That or he didn't even give his final agreement to it, sometimes these guys only get a letter of intent from the agent which doesn't bind to anything.

Unless they're actually getting both Dolph and Van Damme together in this which I doubt...

I saw that it was from the same guys that made ALTITUDE. And Chad Law is the writer/producer. And he confirmed it that it is a movie with Van Damme.
But I wonder what are the chances that those guys liked Dolph's villain (?) role in ALTITUDE that they wanted him secured for another of their movies?

For sure those small companies always want to have Dolph in one of their "products" anytime they have a chance... and I don't think it has anything to do with his performances.

Nothing to do with it and not in the same league, but I just saw MANCHESTER BY THE SEA with Casey Affleck "and Michelle Williams" who sure is great and has a great role in it, but again they sell it with her on the poster as if she was starring whereas she's barely in it out of the 2 hours and 15 minutes of the film...

Chad Law pretty much just confirmed that Dolph is in it (via his Facebook)

Okay, here goes round two I guess, Jean Claude Van Damme (. Hint, hint: There might be a Dolph "aboard" too (.

What a waste... If you're gonna reunite Dolph and Van Damme then give them something with real dramatic conflict and stakes. All these low budget / "high-concept" flicks have no real personal stakes for the characters nothing to hang on to but a rehashed premise (and only plot driven) that goes back decades and decades ago... And if the recent and bigger ESCAPE PLAN was pedestrian this might be boring as hell (and ALTITUDE already looks terrible and like a pain to sit through). This is a terrible decade and action writers today seem to either have terrible taste or are held hostages by producers and financiers of terrible taste... I can only hope I'm wrong and the script is actually more original than it seems but...

I'm with Jox on this. I prefer to have no JCVD / Dolph movie at all over a bad one.
They should get back to doing stuff with John Hyams :(
(In fact, the more it goes, the more I would'nt mind Dolph being cast in Maniac Cop).

I'm going to agree with Jox. They're both way too good for this shit. If they can get someone like William Kaufman, I'll be happy to give it a watch.

You can forget about John Hyams right away UniSol: DoR made no money and Hyams is more interested in moving forwards, not backwards.

Appereantly, the funding for the movie was achieved with Lundgren as the lead role.

It's nice to think they'd be in another movie together but I don't know, this feels off.

The fact that it's made by the same companies as ALTITUDE (which seems very cheap and a bore) is rather scary. You'd hope that if both JCVD and Dolph are, the script isn't too bad and pedestrian but given the sad state of the low budget action market you can't be too confident anymore... (On the other hand depending on the script this could be interesting it gives them enough to work with and emulate them)

If you look at other and bigger movie stars of the 50s, 60s, 70s who starred Oscar winning classics or successes, it's almost inevitable (with some exceptions of course) that the last part of their filmography is going down and we can be happy they aren't doing supporting roles in bad Hallmark Christmas movies or such. Remember many Hollywood superstars died broke and forgotten...

I these troubled times for financing good projects, I hope Dolph can hang on and still manage to make his pet projects (NORDIC LIGHT, WANTED MAN, WITHOUT YOU I'M NOTHING and a modern film-noir piece called COOL BURN) without too many compromises ...

EDIT:

MANIAC COP does seem very quite and despite the support of Nicolas Winding Refn, I don't think Hyams actually has the trust of producers and financiers who won't see his talent and craft and who fear for their (lack of) profit...

It seems like Dolph has come full circle and landed smack bang in Agent Red level hell again. You can guarantee one thing with doing a plane/sub/train disaster film, is that they'll either go the stock footage or ropey CGI route (or both).
The start of this century seemed like utter poison for Dolph and from a place of promise around the end of the first decade, we hit 2017 at another career stagnation, but coming to 60 this year, maybe he's fitting in as many paycheques as possible before retirement. He must be considering it.

But the film industry below the 150 million budget super flicks (which are 80% terrible) is dying completely. No one wants to fund them. Budgets are getting lower and lower. Concepts losing creativity more and more. Everything is shifting to the viral market. Direct distribution. Shoot a film for absolutely nothing and go straight to Youtube. That's how it's going to end up in 4-5 years (if that). Indie films have become poorer. They're not being made as much now because finding funding is so hard, and many have to sellout and find an "angle" to get the little money they can achieve. As such uber cheap horror is still prolific. And if producers didn't have scruples or knew much about film 20 years ago, they know even less now, and as I've found personally, in this era, producers don't even want to do any work. They want something that will take care of itself and make money without having to lift a finger, which something as half baked and half-hearted as Black Water probably would.
