Aquaman adds Dolph Lundgren in a villainous role as Warner Bros. continues inching closer to the start of their next DCEU project. James Wan is currently finishing the pre-production stage on his DC debut that will mark the third appearance of Jason Momoa as the titular character. Momoa has already made his way to Australia to gear up for filming, while Amber Heard (Mera) has continued to keep up to date on her training.

With filming not yet underway, much of the plot remains unknown, outside of the inclusion of Black Manta, indicating he and Arthur Curry clash will over control of the sea. Well, it looks like Black Manta will not be the only foe Aquaman will have to fight off in his first solo film.

THR is reporting that Dolph Lundgren is hopping back into the superhero genre for a role in Aquaman as King Nereus. He is the ruler of Xebel, the home city of Mera. For the purposes of the movie THR says Nereus “claims Mera as his own and wants to kill Aquaman,” putting Lundgren definitively in an antagonistic role.

Pretty cool news.

This is amazing news!

Sounds like his role will be pretty significant as well.

Dolph is having a major post-Expendables career renaissance it seems.

Been hardest (and most excited) secret to sit on. But finally, welcome to Atlantis @Dolph_Lundgren #KingNereus #KingdomOfXebel

James Wan

Been sitting on this casting news for a bit. The nerd in me is super excited to have He-Man join us in the Seven Seas! This description for who he is in the article, is from the comic-book. It's different in my film. But nonetheless, he'll be an awesome King Nereus, ruler of Xebel.

Well, it's nice to have him in a great studio movie, directed by a talented man (but let's hope the director won't be crushed by producers). Side parts tend to be let down on the editing floor in this kind of films, so I'm cooling down my enthusiasm.
Other than that, knowing the comic book a little bit, it's clear Dolph belongs more to this kind of world than a spider man or a superman stuff.

Contrary to what some sources say, it is not certain that Lundgren plays the "villain" of the film, since Ocean Master and Black Manta already have this role. Moreover, James Wan pointed out on Twitter that he will not be "Not quite" a villain.

It seems James Wan is a fan so we owe it to him and the fact that Dolph did good on ARROW (which is a WB show) probably helped Warner Bros say yes.

Zack Snyder cast Momoa as Aquaman to cameo in his film Batman v Superman.

Either way this is fantastic news. James Wan is one of today's best directors.
