Box Office: Michael B. Jordan's 'Creed II' Is A Breakout Sequel
https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmende ... 7b17665bd3
MGM, New Line and Warner Bros.' Creed II had a minor rally on Black Friday, earning another $14.13 million (+59%) on its third day of release. With $34.64m in three days (just shy of the first Creed’s $42m Wed-Sun debut), we’re still looking at an over/under $56m five-day debut. That’s a dynamite result for the Steven Caple Jr.-directed sequel, as Creed 2 (thus far) qualifies as a breakout sequel.

For those unaware, a breakout sequel is when you have a previous installment that is well-liked, earns rave reviews, and has a solidly leggy run both in theater and in post-theatrical (VOD, DVD, etc.). As such, the fandom grows and folks who checked out Batman Begins on the fifth weekend of theatrical release show up three-years-later on The Dark Knight's opening weekend. Think (offhand) John Wick: Chapter 2, Saw II, Pitch Perfect 2, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Scream 2 And, yes, Creed II snagging a 33% larger debut weekend compared to the first Creed absolutely qualifies.

'Creed II': The Peril and Appeal of Fan Service

Two longtime Rocky viewers ask if this should be Sylvester Stallone's swan song.
[This story contains spoilers for Creed II]

The following is a spoiler-intensive conversation about Creed II that pits The Hollywood Reporter contributors Simon Abrams and Steven Boone against each other for the sake of thinking about how they thought about this particular movie (don't read that sentence three time's fast; once is more than enough).

Box Office: 'Ralph Breaks the Internet' Swipes $84.5M; 'Creed II' KO's 'Robin Hood,' 'Green Book' With $56M

Michael B. Jordan's 'Creed 2' KO's Box Office With Record-Breaking $55M Debut
https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmende ... 173122728e
MGM, New Line and Warner Bros.’ Creed II came out swinging over the Thanksgiving weekend. The Steven Caple Jr.-directed sequel to Ryan Coogler’s Creed, which was also a de-facto sequel to Rocky IV, earned a whopping $35.293 million over the Fri-Sun portion of its $55.806m Wed-Sun opening weekend. That’s the biggest debut ever for a live-action release over Thanksgiving, sans inflation of course. And it’s the biggest unadjusted Fri-Sun and Wed-Sun debut ever for a non-Disney release on this specific family-friendly holiday. Oh, and it scored the biggest unadjusted debut for a sports drama and a boxing drama, which of course means it had the biggest debut ever for a Rocky movie. There are nitpicks to be had, but this is a 99.9% total triumph.

Creed II had a comparatively low 4.8x five-day multiplier over the holiday weekend, compared to a 7x multiplier ($42 million from a $6m opening day) for Creed three years ago. Creed earned just 3.5% of its total gross via Tuesday previews ($1.5m), but Creed II earned 6.6% of its weekend total via its previews ($3.7m). To be fair, the sequel was… a sequel. There were plenty of folks who caught up with the first Creed well after opening weekend and then showed up with bells on for the second installment. The “Creed 2 + Rocky 8 + Rocky IV part 2” gimmick enticed folks who might have ignored the movie or merely caught up with it at their leisure as opposed to racing out on opening night.

It isn’t absurd that a film which opens with an opening day 93% larger than its predecessor might be a little front-loaded over the weekend, even with good reviews and an A from Cinemascore. The film still ended up with a five-day opening weekend 31% larger than its predecessor, even if the Fri-Sun weekend ($35m versus $29m) was only 21% larger. Since we’re dealing with a movie that cost around $40 million and thus isn’t counting on an overseas rescue, all of this is mere trivia unless it collapses after the holiday. That’s frankly unlikely since it’s a pretty good sequel despite (or because of?) the silly fan bait premise, and it’ll remain unlike anything else in the marketplace for the rest of the year.

So now the big question is whether it can be leggy enough to pass the unadjusted $127 million domestic total of Rocky IV ($323m adjusted for inflation) to become the biggest Rocky movie ever in raw domestic earnings. If it is merely as leggy as Creed (2.6 x $42m = $110m) or Four Christmases, then it gets to a dynamite $146m domestic cume. But it’s a sequel (to a sequel), to frontloading along the lines of Unbreakable and Spy Games (2x) is not entirely out of the question. That would still give it a $112m gross, which counts as a win in an era when most sequels make less domestically than their predecessors. Yes, those are the two likely extremes concerning reasonable precedents.

A run like The Muppets (rave reviews, an unkillable IP, hardcore nostalgia, a movie technically appropriate for kids that plays to adults, etc.) gets it to $120 million, which frankly smells like the right comparison at the moment. Even if it doesn’t end up with that much more domestically (or worldwide) than the $110m domestic/$173m worldwide-grossing Creed, it’s still proof that the IP is still a big deal. The two-for-one franchise of a Rocky IV sequel and a character-driven, mid-budget, studio-backed drama starring folks who look like Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson (which itself is sadly unique unto itself in the marketplace) was a winning combo. Creed II may not have topped the weekend, but it is an undisputed box office champion.

Ok. I won't spoil anything for those not living in the states after seeing it tonight... this is absolutely the best work I've ever seen from Dolph. And thank you to Steven Caple Jr. and whoever allowed more of the Drago story to be fleshed out on screen.

Absolutely a must see for true big D fans.

Aquaman will make a gazillion dollars and Dolph will get to be a part of that which is cool... but this was personal considering Drago was where he got his start. Even the people (my family) I went to see the movie with were rooting for the Dragos and wanted more of them after the credits rolled.

Can't wait to see what the success of these two films do for him going forward.

Obviously I'm biased because Dolph came back for this one. But if I was to be impartial I'd say the first Creed might be a better "film" overall.. but I definitely enjoyed II more as a fan of the series. It had good closure to the whole Rocky/Creed universe to if they wanted to stop it here.

(Which we know they won't)

Little White Lies review
https://lwlies.com/reviews/creed-ii/
Perhaps most commendable thing about Creed II is its handling of Ivan Drago as Rocky’s polar opposite. He’s a man who can’t let go of his toxic pride, living vicariously through his son, whereas Rocky encourages Adonis to be his own man – forget vengeance. When Drago speaks to Viktor he almost exclusively uses the plural pronoun ‘we’, as though his past failure to beat Rocky is on his son’s head too. The relationship between the two is the most interesting aspect of the film, so it’s a shame their shared screentime is restricted to a handful of scenes.

MGM's Creed II could face some competition for second in Universal and Illumination's The Grinch, but we're expecting it to edge out the animated title with a drop right around -50% for an $18 million second weekend and a domestic cume right around $82 million come the end of the weekend. Truth of the matter is, this is a tough one to forecast. Creed II's debut was the largest Thanksgiving weekend opening ever for a live action title, topping the first film's five day performance by ~$14 million. To that point, Creed dropped -49% in its second weekend, but it played better throughout the week compared to its sequel, though that could also be attributed to a weaker crowd of competing titles back in November 2015.

First French review, excellent but beware of spoilers
http://fuckingcinephiles.blogspot.com/2 ... eed-2.html

This is paragraph on Dolph is a little complicated to translate perfectly, but basically says that Sly offered Dolph his very best role after his notable presence in THE EXPENDABLES and that this is the perfect work to let him express his talent here...

MGM's Creed II dropped -53% in its second weekend for an estimated $16.8 million and a twelve day gross that now totals over $81 million. The drop is just a couple percentage points below the first film (which is to be expected given the sheer size of the sequel's five-day debut last weekend), while the twelve day total remains ~$17 million ahead of where the first film was at the same point in release.

Internationally, Creed II started playing in a couple of smaller markets last weekend, but this weekend expanded into 29 total markets and delivered an estimated $10 million for an international cume that stands at $11.4 million. The top market was the UK where it brought in an estimated $3.9 million, placing second beyond Ralph Breaks the Internet, which also opened this weekend and topped the market with an estimated $5.2 million. Creed II also opened in Australia where it debuted with $2.2 million for a #1 finish. The film won't really begin playing in most key markets until the new year, beginning with Mexico on January 1 followed by France (Jan 9), Russia (Jan 10), Japan (Jan 11), Germany (Jan 24), Italy (Jan 24), Brazil (Jan 24) and Spain (Jan 25).
