The long July 4th holiday weekend is turning into a bonanza for Hollywood as Minions: The Rise of Gru heads for huge four-day opening of $129.2 million domestically, according to early estimates. That includes $109.5 million for the three days.
Globally, the movie will jump the $200 million mark sometime on Sunday.
Forget about breaking pandemic-era records for a family title; the Illumination and Universal movie will boast one of the top starts ever at the domestic box office for an animated Hollywood tentpole, not adjusted for inflation.
Friday’s haul alone was around $48 million from 4,400 theaters, including a hefty $10.8 million in previews.
Remember 1998 when this site was first launched by Blaine? I was (happily) shocked to find out that I wasn't alone rooting for the Swede. Remember late 2003-early 2004 when I took over? Well, between this and AQUAMAN, it is actually strange to hear all those years later that Dolph is now associated with some of the biggest box office hits (no matter how big or small are his roles)...!

Indeed, apart from a couple of lines and a few grunts (along with everybody else so it's even harder to distinguish), we barely hear Dolph at all even though his character is seen from start to finish. Same could be said about JCVD, Danny Trejo or Lucy Lawless, so you have to wonder if they didn't cut or change a whole lot since they recorded the voices first, or else why would you spend money on name actors?
Michelle Yeoh has a decent part though, Alan Arkin too, and Taraji P. Henson has the biggest role as Vicious 6 leader "Belle Bottom".
P.S. Dolph had more lines in ROCKY IV, and he was an actual physical presence and not an animated character.

Huge start in France on its opening yesterday with 510,000 admissions + 93,000 in premieres, rounding it up at 603,500 admissions already (which would be great as a finish line for any other film) https://www.boxofficepro.fr/box-office- ... -fois-gru/

Minions 2 came in No. 2 in its second weekend with $45.6 million for a domestic total of $210.1 million and $399.9 [worldwide], already making it the most successful family title since the COVID-19 crisis struck.

Lucy Lawless (XENA / "Nunchuck"):
“I was excited about the role because the Despicable Me and Minions franchises have such charming and memorable characters and stories,” Lawless says. “And on top of that, I had the opportunity to work in the same film as Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren. My 16-year-old self told me I had to do it!”

Too bad that they have to cut the most of DL lines for pacing reasons and stuff. I think he was disappointed somehow when watched it with his kids and Emma at the premiere. It was a good cartoon movie, it still keeps people interested after so many years of Despicable Me franchise. Let's see what is in deleted scenes section on blu ray soon
