Like Bomaz said you can make a good Submariner film if you handle the tone/atmosphere correctly... you hardly even need CGI if you have a good script/director.

And don't forget that for BLACK WATER they just used some of the same stock footage as AGENT RED for the exterior and underwater shots of the submarine (coming from USS ALABAMA and or THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER)...

USS Cod Submarine Memorial

The "Operation Seawolf" crew has packed up and moved to their next city for filming. We really enjoyed working with this group of talented professionals and meeting actor Dolph Lundgren was pretty cool too. Some folks have asked just what we did, beyond providing extras to handled the torpedo. Well our main job was to provide a suitable working environment aboard a sub in the middle of a February snow storm. We did our best to keep the critical areas warm enough to work in while protecting the boat from unintended damage. We decided that we would also provide a warm refuge in the crews mess with beverages and snacks for everyone. I'm proud to say that worked out well.

Seems like this one will use real historical characters. I wonder if it will be a "realistic" historical piece, or just a random war movie. I'm torn between feelings about this one :)

To take with a pinch of salt, but it appears Frank Grillo might be in Operation Seawolf (I always thought he and Dolph should do something together).

Just saw the picture on Instagram with one of the actors and Frank Grillo aswell. If agree with you that they should do something together, if Frank Grillo is gonna be in it i hope it won't be a small role and that they'll share some scenes together tho.

It was still filming yesterday. But it looks like Dolph only had 5 or 6 days to shoot.

That's a wrap on Operation Seawolf, now moving into post-production. We had such an amazing experience shooting on The Battleship Iowa which was the same ship used for filming on Captain America Winter Soldier.
Operation Seawolf will be hitting the big screen in 2022.

Director: Steven Luke

Cast: Dolph Lundgren, Frank Grillo

Genre: War, Action/Adventure

Year Produced: 2021

By June 1944, the hunters have become the hunted. After two years of successful North Atlantic operations against allied shipping, the German submarine U-505 is finally cornered and captured by an American Hunter-Killer task force. The submarine’s captain and first officer are grievously wounded in the intense firefight. With the damage sub floundering and a treasure trove of intelligence and equipment on board, an American crew rushes to make repairs and tow the crippled ship back to a protected U.S. port. After waking in an American sick bay, the submarine’s first officer, Paul Meyer, is interrogated by American Naval Intelligence Officer Joe Quigley (Don Johnson). The capture of the crew is an incredible intelligence coup, and Quigley digs deep for German secrets as a wounded Meyer begins to reveal everything in a string of edge of your seat flashbacks.

Don Johnson??!

Well... I wouldn't bet that he share time with Dolph (or even grillo... or that event those 3 share any screentime  ) but he would be a classy addition to the movie.

For some reason I had never heard of him before (and I've not seen the 2010s CAPTAIN AMERICA movies):

Grillo has become a staple of the DTV genre, with the occasional big screen acting gig. He's pretty dependable, he looks the part, and he's always game, even for those lesser projects. So him signing on for OPERATION SEAWOLF is indeed promising. Sadly though, doesn't look like he'll share any scenes with Dolph.

This goes to show how "out of the loop" I've been in the genre for the past decade or more, rather focusing on non-action, non-genre cinema...
