The DVD didn't have English audi, that's why I never bought it. But I guess I won't buy this one either. Sorry, Dolph, that movie is just too bad and too boring.

What is the best non-US version of this on DVD?

Canadian - or the German Blu-ray that is actually of DVD quality but features both cuts of the film and the trailer. (note that the newer cut is in German only though - English for this one is only available in HK to my knowledge)

About the two cuts :
(for those who haven't read the site thoroughly ;))

Thanks, Jox! Amazon uk show an all region version that I assume is chinese, but I assume it's simply a rip of the US disk; I have one of those for Shooter, and it's the Hidden Assassin rip. I would settle for that, but I hear the US version is bad quality.

Oh that's the HK one with the newer cut.

The US disc is fine by me, but I hope we'll get a proper blu-ray in widescreen some day...

I thought it's natural OAR was 4:3, yet again you are a fountain of info
Is the HK version english friendly?

Thanks, no it was shot 1.85:1 on 35mm film (like 99% features at that time)!

Yeah that HK version has an English track but the video encoding isn't the greatest though, just note that it has a new score, new prologue added by the producers so it's different from the more widely released previous cut (that isn't close to what the director wanted either)...

It's not one of his best... it's a real oddity this one, but I'm a completist! I haven't seen it since it came out on VHS.

Fore sure. I was really looking forward to this one back then, eagerly waiting for almost 2 years and was so disappointed when I got to see it...!

First time I heard about the project Italian horror director Michele Soavi (DELLAMORTE DELLAMORE, THE CHURCH) seemed to be attached so that sounded pretty cool, then I think they kind of reworked it as a more action oriented flick for which of course they didn't have much money and wouldn't even pay for enough blood squibs...

Jean-Marc Piché, who's a successful commercial director in Canada, got on board merely days before filming and did what he could.

He admits his take on the score maybe wasn't great but he tried to get a music as a cross between Eric Serra (LEON, NIKITA etc) and Mark Isham's score for ROMEO IS BLEEDING...

Other than that how the film was transfered and mastered on VHS and DVD looks nothing like how he shot it, the official cut isn't his and yeah, couldn't really shoot the movie as he pleased.

Soavi... now THAT would have been interesting. So what version did Dolph sign up for, that version, or did he come on board later?

Same time as Soavi, that was announced at Cannes in 1996 (one year before the movie was shot).

THE MINION soon on Blu-ray and widescreen 1.85 aspect ratio?

I'd hope so but I wouldn't take this info for granted yet. Mill Creek is releasing in a 3-movies DVD pack for now...
