I remember Sly said (in Stallone accent), "Look, Dolph, we're gonna be the s* together.'

Hilarious!

I saw this yesterday and thought it was okay. It kind of didn't work in a lot of ways, while in others it was very good.

Big problems in the film are of course the dubbing, which makes a serious story often come across as comical. Also the fact is, they've cut 3 hours down to just under 2 for this US version, so the film is quite disjointed and has a weird pace to it. Even with an hour sliced off it's very slow moving, cause in reality not much is happening. However because an hour is missing, the film feels choppy still. Aside from anything I just didn't find the story particularly interesting and it seems to shift focus dramatically near the end, perhaps also due to the amount cut. Disappointly Dolph's final moments and death (as of course we all know this now) have been butchered. He did have a bit of a Sean Bean LOTR kind of death in the longer version but (perhaps to make pg-13) it's been butchered.

The cast are quite good, ignoring the dubbing of course. Monica Cruz is just gorgeous, while Liotti in the lead is decent (despite his rah-rah-spiffy-spiffy! British accent). Hristo Shopov is also pretty good. On the downside F Murray Abraham is going through the motions and is pretty bad here. I couldn't actually tell whether he was being dubbed or whether he was actually hamming it that badly. However I can't believe this is the same dude who gave one of the best performances I've ever seen in Amadeus. Max Von Sydow is also about the worst I've seen him, and all to brief. Sadly though as some have mentioned the film is often unintentionally funny.

Now for the good. On the most part the film looks great. Vast settings, lavish production values and a really good sense of scale here. It's great having shorts where you can see hundreds of costumed extras way off in the background, it really emerses you in the world. By far this is Dolph's most lavish and large scale production, probably since Rocky 4. It doesn't look like they've scrimped on anything. The cinematogrphy is good too and there's some nice camera work, good use of long takes in this. Also the score from Andrea Morricone is actually one of the best I've heard in the last few years, it's great stuff. It's got Ennio written all over it and is really interesting, and at times carries the film single handed.

And of course finally to Dolph himself. Well as has been mentioned, his inclusion seems out of place (if only cause he's one of the few doing his own voice) and strange, but at the same time, he's the best character here. This is Dolph's best performance and he really does have a hint of the Mani (Dacascos in Brotherhood of The Wolf) about him. It's a shame they didn't just cut something else out and leave in all of Dolphs bits really.

Overall it's not bad, not particularly great, but it's just really good to see Dolph in a film with a decent budget, and a good production. I really hope someone gives him this amount of money to make a film of his own, and also allows him to get a cast as good too. I'd certainly love him to work with Andrea Morricone and I'm getting visions of Dolphs WW1 (or was it 2) epic. I hope Dolph gets some more parts in bigger movies too, because to keep his acting game up, he does need to work with other directors who specialise in it. He won't really improve his acting under Danny Lerner in all due respect, or most B-movie action directors. So I'd love to see him in another European production like this, only next time something that'll all be filmed in the one language, and perhaps not another bible epic. Still this was a worthy addition to Dolph's resume. ***

Just saw it. Dolph has a very nice role, his barbarian Brixos is one of his best perfomances. And that scene were you know what happens - I almost cry. Hope to see the full version of the movie.[/code]

I know, what the hell?!

Oh, and he is in it for about 30 minutes in total I would guess if my memory serves me correctly, but is really giving his all 100% of the time.

I've just ordered this online, though I wasn't aware of the US disc being so heavily cut. Any idea if the uncut version of the film will ever see the light of day?

Don't take it personally it's the same cut worldwide. It's just the Italian TV version that's 3 hours long.
