It isn't Oscar-worthy, Golden Globe-worthy or even worthy of a blue ribbon at a film festival. But "Machine" plays entirely too many B-movie tricks for anyone to mistake it for something wanting to be anything other than what it is. And where's the harm in that? The shootouts and fights are executed well, the twists are just ridiculous enough to enjoy without totally shredding logic, the kid is cute, and Lundgren's under-appreciated charisma gets a chance to shine in limited doses. As throwaway popcorn entertainment goes, this one fulfills its objective at leaves it precisely at that.

I just picked up my copy of The Killing Machine-released today here in the USA. It includes a great 22 minute "Behind the Scenes/Making Of" featurette with interviews with Dolph and a lot of the other cast members.

"The Killing Machine" may bill itself as a hi-octane action-packed thrill-ride, but it is a lot more than that.

The movie, starring Dolph Lundgren - who also serves as the film's director - has an honorable message that is rarely found in a flick of this caliber. Sure, there is plenty of explosive excitement, but there is also some depth to this piece of entertainment.

Granted, "The Killing Machine" does not have the depth that this fall's "The American" had, but, all things considered, it does well for what, at first glance, appears to be a brainless action extravaganza.

So, perhaps Lundgren, whose acting matches his Frankenstein-ish appearance, deserves some credit for his decent directing skills. He has created a motion picture that is both entertaining and emotionally satisfying.
