I think this one is still fairly good especially in the dramatic scenes, it sounds a lot like the COLLATERAL score. Regarding the rock/metal influences I agree, although it would have worked only if the film was less "in between fun and serious" (and more a la GHOST OF MARS for instance). But as Nordén said in my
interview, he thought about it for a second but he and Dolph only talked about incorporating lots of drums etc.
I actually agree that The Defender had a better score, more suited for the action. It's a little rougher than Command Performance. Plus, it has that strange "porn music" during the "waiting" scene, and it's pretty funny and unique (not sure if that's what he was going for...).
The CD score would have been PERFECT for a "Collateral " kind of movie!
Having a rock/metal influenced score and NOT have it sound funny is VERY difficult, but it can be done. Many action movies use entire hardcore/metal songs for big fight scenes but incorporating the standard instrumentation for a rock band into the score and making it sound cool is HARD. Like, just, striking a big power chord on the guitar for effect is very comical, you'd have to find other ways to make it work.
"more drums, etc" sounds just right. A percussive score is, of course, the standard way to enhance action for a reason. But they opted out of it. Too bad. It would have helped. In my humble opinion. It's not a bad score though, it's just kinda unenergetic for this kind of movie.
