That was obvious (especially for a film that was shot in 1992). It was probably one of the first American movies to have ripped off John Woo's gunfights. At this time he was only known in the west among hard-core film buffs, critics and filmmakers who were buying his movies notably on import laserdiscs...

Van Damme was probably the first to borrow the Woo-feel when he shoots up the drug factory in DOUBLE IMPACT.

But the shootout in ARMY OF ONE is easily the best John Woo shootout not actually filmed by Woo. My jaw still drops during much of that sequence.

Thank you, jox.

i agree, moltisanti. I watched the shootout on youtube again last night and i'm still blown away by how freaking violent it is! So many squibs that even sam peckinpah would cringe! Are there any other good shootouts in the film?

There's a decent one a little bit after that main sequence where Dolph shoots it out with the cops, doesn't involve as many people but I love the "explosive" exit he makes when he drives away.

Aside from that there isn't much in the way of memorable gunplay, but I like the car chase at the end and Dolph's fight scene with Beau Starr. I don't know exactly what the budget of the film was, but I gotta believe a good chunk of it was spent on the chop shop sequence. In retrospect it was a sound investment.

Absolutely. Think of all the high points in his filmography... all of the top movies have awesome end sequences with a big fight, either guns/explosions or outstanding hand-to-hand fights: Joshua Tree, UniSol, Men of War. So I wish they would do something like this Joshua Tree finale again. Wow. When it comes to non-hand-to-hand fights, this is easily and by far the best in all of his movies.

I was only talking about VHS. This German edition you refer to has the aspect ratio slightly off (like 2.30 or 2.20) I think.

It's almost impossible for me to find the dvd of this film. Five years ago I saw the dvd at a Boscov's in the mall and now the dvd section is gone. So much for that.

Discuss the score on composer Joel Goldsmith's forum (who I understands posts as "FreeClyde" and says there's possibility of CD release in future)

Meanwhile you can find the ripped music themes here

Now that THE PUNISHER has been released, JOSHUA TREE is one of my most wanted Dolph score to be released along with Jan Hammer's DARK ANGEL!
