According to the convention interview, the movie has (kinda) been abandoned.

It doesn't mean much but the Italian co-producers/financiers at Sun Film Group kept it as "in pre-production" on their revamped website:

Updated synopsis
http://www.sunfilmgroup.it/eng/malevolence/
Miles is an ageing man working in a modest restaurant for tourists in Rome. He can’t remember who he is nor what happened to him: his mind is confused and he can no longer build anything from his past. When he starts having flashbacks about the tragedy that took everything from him, his determination to find the people responsible will lead him to muster every bit of energy he’s got to finally obtain justice.

Dolph Lundgren takes position behind the camera, directing a film rich with twists written by two up-and-coming masters of action and martial arts film: Chee Keong Cheung and Oliver Morran.

For what it's worth, I was told today that the project is still in the pipeline...

Dolph himself mentioned MALEVOLENCE again during his panel in Mexico last week (see the YT link in the "INTERVVIEWS" & "CONVENTIONS" threads)...

(It sounds very trivial to post here these days since the world is on hiatus and who knows the consequences n the coming months and years)

Uh oh, looks like one of the producers of MALEVOLENCE isn’t too happy with Dolph at the moment...

Well, that probably means no Malevolence with Dolph in the near future.
Funny enough, Dolph's attorney is (I think) Scharzy's nephew.

Here’s what I’m betting happened... This producer agrees to help finance MALEVOLENCE, as long as Dolph agreed to doing a behind the scenes documentary concurrently. Sorta like JCVD’s BEHIND CLOSED DOORS from 11 years ago. Only MALEVOLENCE never materialized, so why do the documentary? Especially since there wasn’t much going in 2020... Hopefully this can get squared away quickly.

This associate "producer", Chee Keong Cheung, is one of the co-writers and they met through a common friend. D loved the MALEVOLENCE script, and they kept working on polishing the screenplay over the years that the project kept going "on" and "off"...

The documentary project came about in 2019 because of MALEVOLENCE was stalling (but not abandoned as it was still in the works as of summer 2020), and because Cheung had a good vision for it that D responded to. That's not the first documentary project that came about in the last 8 years...

But did they shoot footage for the documentary? And will it be released as a documentary? I mean, I would love to see this....

It said they did shoot more than 100 hours of footage. But my guess is that they will fall in limbo (or resurface on youtube one of these days).

As Moltisanti pointed out to me, with Dolph being so prevalent on social media, like Instagram, as well as his constant Cameo videos, is there much of a market and demand for these "behind the scenes" exposes? Seems passe at this point.

I don't mean to be disrespectful, but I think that the audience of such a documentary would be... mostly us fans, some nostalgic people and that's about it. Let's face it, Dolph is not Dwayne Johnson or Stallone, and it wouldn't interest that much people (but that's only my opinion)
