He-Man Film ‘Masters of the Universe’ Director Short-List Includes ‘Lego Movie’ Editor (Exclusive)

Harald Zwart, Chris McKay and Mike Cahill (“Another Earth”) are in contention to direct the movie for Sony and Escape Artists

As Sony Pictures and Escape Artists scramble to get their He-Man movie “Masters of the Universe” off the ground, three directors have emerged as frontrunners for the high-profile job, including Mike Cahill, Chris McKay and Harald Zwart, an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap.

Jon M. Chu was previously attached to direct the film, which is based on the classic 1980s animated TV series. No deals are in place and a studio insider cautions that other directors are still in the mix.

Of the four mentioned above, Zwart makes the most sense for the gig, as he directed Sony’s reboot of “The Karate Kid,” which grossed an impressive $359 million worldwide. A studio favorite who previously directed Sony’s “Pink Panther 2,” Zwart also has experience making big-budget, VFX-heavy movies, having directed “Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” for Screen Gems, which is owned by Sony.

Cahill would be an intriguing choice, as he’s made his mark in Hollywood with low-budget, sci-fi-themed dramas such as “Another Earth” and “I Origins,” both of which were bought by Fox Searchlight out of Sundance. “Masters of the Universe” would represent a major leap for Cahill in terms of scope and budget, though he has proved he can create snazzy visuals with minimal funds.

McKay, believe it or not, has the most momentum despite the fact that he has yet to direct a studio movie. McKay served as the editor of “The Lego Movie,” as well as its animation supervisor/co-director. He is also one of the key creative forces behind Adult Swim’s hit series “Robot Chicken.”

Last month, a blog reported that the “Masters of the Universe” gig was between Joe Cornish, Rian Johnson, Andy Muschietti, “The Croods” directors Kirk DeMicco and Chris Sanders, and “The Lego Movie” directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Those names, which popped up on tracking boards across Hollywood, proved to be inaccurate.

Terry Rossio (“The Lone Ranger”) wrote the most recent draft of “Masters of the Universe,” which is being produced by Escape Artists principals Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch. Set on Eternia, the story follows a blond warrior named Prince Adam who turns into the heroic He-Man and battles a villain named Skeletor out to conquer Castle Grayskull.

Mattel is also involved with the movie, as its execs Julia Pistor and David Voss will executive produce on behalf of the company. Sony execs Hannah Minghella and DeVon Franklin will oversee the project for the studio, which is expected to make a decision next month.

CAA reps Zwart and WME reps Cahill, while McKay is repped by UTA and Mosaic.

KICK ASS 2 director on board? Hummm...
http://schmoesknow.com/a-phantom-exclus ... -universe/
And the Phantom strikes again! Hot off the desk from said Phantom comes exclusive news that KICK-ASS 2 writer/director Jeff Wadlow’s next directing project will be MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE for Sony Pictures.

Wadlow, who is also rumored to be in consideration for an X-FORCE movie over at Fox, is high in demand, obviously. And it looks like the guy is hitting the big times now with Sony’s big screen adaptation of the fabled Action Figure turned Animated TV series that so many of us grew up loving.

Like Man at Arms. I love Man at Arms. Will HE be in the movie??? He better be… (he said while shaking his fist!)
Trades are likely to announce this news any day now – or second, depending on what side of the country you are on. But the Phantom assures me it’s a done deal. As in: ‘Deal closed. It’s official.’ That’s some done deal talk right there…

1987 forever.

Movieweb reports that:
Jeff Wadlow's deal is only to write the script at this time, he could still end up directing the feature. While many are wondering who will direct Masters of the Universe, sources claim that the story is still far from ready, which lead to Jeff Wadlow coming on board to rework the screenplay, putting him in a good spot to direct once the studio decides to move forward.

MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE (Gary Goddard, 1987)

New Masters of the Universe script.....again. This one is re-written by Jeff Wadlow.
We'll see if this one gets anywhere. The toys and comics have rebooted since, perhaps Sony will give this some kind of traction with Marvel doing so well. I am not holding my breath though.

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Scribe to Pen ‘Masters of the Universe’ for Sony (EXCLUSIVE)

After helping shape the world of Asgard, “Thor” scribe Christopher Yost is now ready to head to Eternia to help He-Man return to the bigscreen.

Sony Pictures and Escape Artists have tapped Yost to do a rewrite on its reboot of “Masters of the Universe.”

Terry Rossio and Jeff Wadlow wrote previous drafts of “Masters of the Universe,” which is being produced by Escape Artists principals Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch.

Set on the planet of Eternia, the story follows a warrior named Prince Adam who has the power to transform into the heroic He-Man. His nemesis is a villain named Skeletor who seeks to conquer a fortress known as Castle Grayskull in order to learn the secrets held within.

Filmation/Mattel’s “He Man and the Masters of the Universe” cartoon ran from 1983-85 and spawned a movie starring Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella that subsequently became a cult hit.

Yost cut his teeth in the Marvel writing room on a number of animated properties before contributing to the first “Thor” film and providing a polish on the script for “Thor: the Dark World.” Marvel was so impressed with his work on the first two films in the franchise that they tapped him to co-write the upcoming “Thor: Ragnarok” with Craig Kyle.

He is repped by Verve and Industry Entertainment.

Rumor is that Mike O'Hearn may have been cast as He-Man but it could be just that he posted the following quote on his Instagram only to attract some attention:

Oh god... :?
McG Orbiting ‘Masters Of The Universe’ At Sony
McG is in talks that could lead to him helming Masters Of The Universe, a live-action film based on the signature Mattel toy line that is in high gear at Sony Pictures and Escape Artists.

Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch are producing, with DeVon Franklin. Last script is by the writing team of Alex Litvak and Mike Finch. McG will oversee a rewrite, first. McG previously launched Charlie’s Angels for Sony. McG, who has been directing the New Line horror thriller The Babysitter, is repped by WME and Management 360.

EDIT:
Someone claiming to have worked on original film says in the comments:
tomjay5
McG could shoot stills of his stick-figure story boards on his iPhone and it would be better than the Menachem Golan version from the 80’s. And I speak with authority because I closely worked on it and saw the screaming wreckage of twisted cinematic metal from a front row seat. Never has cluelessness so valiantly carried the day. And this in spite of a game and talented cast and many craftspeople who gave it their skilled all. Alas Babylon…

Who knows who that is or if it's legit though but we know the production wasn't a picnic...
