Filmmaker is a broad term that can include the producers. And unlike most people think the producer's job isn't just to deal with the money, the "development" process as it's called include not only financing, but supervising the script writing, polishes and rewrites, trying out directors etc (all this which in some cases can take up to 10 years or more sometimes). And Joel Silver, very much like the old times (when producers like Daryl Zanuck were in the spotlight rather than the directors), is the kind of producer that can have more influence on a project than the director.

Joel Silver was a great producer during the 90's.

Hell, the guy produced pretty much every action film in the 80s that wasn't a Carolco property or a Chuck Norris film. Commando, Die Hard, Roadhouse, Cobra, you name it.

It would be nice if they gave Dolph a cameo, since he was in the first He-Man movie, maybe this time Dolph could be Man-of-arms :)

He-Man
Warner Bros. and Silver Pictures have tapped newcomer Evan Daugherty to pen the latest draft of "Grayskull," the studio's big-screen take on Mattel's "Masters of the Universe" cartoon and toy line.

John Stevenson ("Kung Fu Panda") is attached to direct the adaptation of the show, which followed a blond warrior named Prince Adam who, when uttering the magic words, "By the power of Grayskull -- I have the power," turned into the heroic He-Man. He and his allies -- Battle Cat, Man-at-Arms and Orko -- defended their planet Eternia from the evil forces of Skeletor, who tried week after week to conquer the fortress Castle Grayskull, which imbued He-Man with his powers.

Warners sees the big-screen version as a gritty fantasy and reimagines Adam as a soldier who sets off to find his destiny, happening upon the magical world of Eternia. There, Skeletor has raised a technological army and is bent on eradicating magic.

Justin Marks penned the previous draft.

Warner Bros. and Mattel will be parting company on "Masters of the Universe," the live-action reinvention of the signature Mattel toy line that WB and producer Joel Silver have been developing since 2007.
Mattel and WB didn't see eye to eye over the direction of the project and made a mutual decision to let the option lapse this month. Story revolves around He-Man, a prince who becomes a warrior battling the evil Skeletor for control of his magical homeland.

Mattel will take back the property and set it up elsewhere. The expectation is that director John Stevenson ("Kung Fu Panda") will remain with the project, but not Silver, who is exclusive to WB.

As Disney's Marvel Entertainment acquisition and WB's overhaul of DC Comics and its movie output shows, branded properties are important commodities. The owners of those brands now have more direct involvement -- and higher expectations.

You can't beat the 1987 "Masters of the Universe" or the cartoon series :D

Apparently Columbia Pictures / Sony is negotiating with Mattel to pick up the MOTU rights and re-develop the project from the ground up (meaning disregarding all the previous talent attachments and script drafts).

Should Dolph play KING GRAYSKULL in new HE-MAN film?

Columbia Pictures is going to be making a new HE-MAN movie in the near future. Many HE-MAN fans at He-man.org have said that they would like to see Dolph given a cameo, either as King Randor (He-Man's dad), or King Grayskull (ancestor of He-Man, who Prince Adam gets his power from when he says "By the Power of Grayskull!") Curious what you fans of Dolph would think of him playing this role. It would probably just be a cameo, but it would be a very cool one, for sure.

A cameo would be cool. Either of those make sense. To "hand over the reins" by giving the New He-Man his powers would be a nice nod towards the original film. But then again, being He-Mans father sort of makes the same statement.

Welcome to the forum, BTW

That'd be awesome to have Dolph as King Grayskull. He should get a cameo. The original film has increased in popularity over the years, and has a cult following. But not simply for the sake of it, it would also, whether D had starred in MOTU or not, be good casting anyway. This and Conan would be a couple of good follow ups to Expendables.

Yeah Dolph would be great for that. I don't really like the inclusion of a "King Grayskull" which seems to have only appeared after the 2002 reboot cartoon (nor am I a fan of the characters who appeared only since the Filmation show btw) but yeah if you have to have those, Dolph is perfect, I'm just not sure he's comfortable getting back into this universe (seems to connect from anything that is too superhero-like from I heard him say) but who knows...

KING GRAYSKULL is more of a "Conan" type character, so I don't think he would have any real issues with that. It would be great exposure for him for sure, as it would be seen in theaters all over the world.
