Casino Royale - a Bond movie or not? (contains 1 spoiler)

Postby Mosquito on 29 Nov 2006, 01:47

Hi guys, just returned from the cinema where I saw the new Bond movie (original version, not dubbed, no distracting subtitles). What do I think?

1. A good movie.
2. A good Bond movie? Hm... where were the gadgets and the real fun? This was quite serious.
3. The intro sucked. Heck, I'm female and straight but if I watch a Bond movie I expect an intro with music like Shirley Bassey's Goldfinger and intros with shapes of beautiful women and guns. Best one was the green and golden one (like circuit boards). Was that Tomorrow Never Dies? Anyway, this one sucked artwork and music wise. Prude, unimaginative, not beautiful and with inappropriate music.
4. Is Daniel Craig *the* next Bond? I don't think so. He has charisma and a sympathetic appearance yet can be brutal. Very convincing. But not a Bond. He looks working class and lacks the necessary amount of style, arrogance and snobbishness. He's like Jason Stratham, The Transporter would have been a good movie for Daniel Craig (as it was for Stratham). Could also be a good villain (though I really liked the quiet moments when he was comforting or caressing Eva Green). For a Bond he'd need a nose and ear job. ;) But I really like his voice.
5. Story? Ok though sometimes a bit confusing.

(SPOILER)
I was disappointed that the alleged chief villain died so suddenly and unspectacularly.

Call me crazy but I still think Rupert Everett would be better. But I have to give credits to Daniel Craig's workout efforts. Nice body... ;)

What's your opinion?

I'm not really a huge Bond fan and I had a blast with CASINO ROYALE. I don't miss the gadgets at all. Too many gadgets was what helped make DIE ANOTHER DAY such a bad film.

Craig was perfect as Bond. He was funny, but not too funny, and definitely looked like someone you would not want to mess with. I hope he continues to do a good job in future Bond films

I loved it, thought it went back to the routes of the first Bond films with Connery. The first two films after all didn't have much in the way of gadgets. I think the last few years the Bond series has become too reliant on gadgets, and gimmicky aciton. I hated DAD and WINE, they were nearly as bad as Moonraker.
Just as an action movie too, CR kicked ass. The crane sequence was the best action scene I've seen in years.

Yeah, cool idea. I almost laughed when they threw that gun at each other. A fresh approach on how to use a firearm. ;-) Daniel Craig is an action movie man, absolutely.

Is it true that Hugh Jackman was first choice for the role? Style-wise he would have been more appropriate. A guy who can sing Disney musicals and still pull off a badass Wolverine must be a perfect Bond. Kick ass and drink Martinis with style. Ok, he's not British but neither was Pierce Brosnan. And he wouldn't have trouble faking a believable British accent I guess.

You're not crazy. This guy is perfect for beeing James Bond.
I must say that I'm not a big fan of the Bond series. To SF some times.
With Rupert you will have the Bond we are used too.

I'm happy that Casino Royale isn't the typical James Bond movie.Looking forward to see it.

Cool!!!!!!!!James Bond is a spy not David Beckam.

Yeah, he was one of the top choices, though I'm not sure if he was first choice. Seems like half the current stars in Hollywood were considered at some point - Jackman, Jude Law, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, et al.

And if you think some of those were strange choices....

Apparently, the producers toyed with the idea of casting Colin Firth as the first black Bond.............
..........Oh yeah, and then there was some idiot's suggestion that there be a female Bond, namely Angelina Jolie................. :?

"Casino"-is pretty good action movie, but it isn't great as "Bond" movie. It's more like Jason Born's movies....
