WANTED MAN (Dolph Lundgren, 2023)

Postby Jox on 26 Jul 2009, 11:50

It's kind of another modern day western set on the US/Mexican border. A lawman must bring back a witness and survive while they're being chased...

Sounds interesting. The storyline reminds me of Clint Eastwoods THE GAUNTLET from 1977 where he is assigned to escort a girl into custody from Las Vegas to Phoenix, so she can testify against the mob.

the plot made me think about "three burials" by Tommy Lee Jones.
If Dolph directs and write, he will bring more than a chase taste to this film.

I agree with both Darling and Bomaz. No it's not very original but then it gives Dolph some range to add a special touch to it. ICARUS doesn't sound too original either but what I've seen was quite different and bald from what you'd expect...

I think Dolph still consider himself an amateur director still learning the tools of the trade, and one way for him to train is start with simple stories and shape them up the best he can. Once he'll feel more comfortable he might tackle more sophisticated or ambitious subject matters.

And even if this story has benn told a thousand times before, there's still room for yet another variation. Consider the difference between all those movies that deal with "guy has to escort convict/witness somewhere":

1. The Gauntlet (Eastwood, Locke 1977)
2. Midnight Run (DeNiro, Grodin 1988)
3. 16 Blocks (Willis, Def 2006)
4. Chasers (Berenger, Eleniak 1994)
....

Same story, always a totally different movie. So I'm not disappointed. Think about Men of War (group of mercenaries try to take an island) or Rocky IV (athlete fights an evil opponent and wins against all odds). Not very unique stories but great movies.

It is said that there are only seven different plots in storytelling and thusly ALL stories are variations/combinations of those plots. Add to that the fact that if you want to tell a story filled with extraordinary events, you need to put your protagonists in predicaments were extraordinary events seem plausible.

If you want alot of shooting and explosions (wich I do-cuz it's awesome) you need to create scenarios were the audience find it somewhat beleivable to HAVE a lot of shooting and explosions. Try to think of such scenarios yourself, and you'll see what the difficulty of coming up with brand new ideas for action movies is.

So don't worry; we will see "terrorist sieges" and "avanging the murder of your family" a million more times.

Wanted Man has certainly been done before, but it can still be as good a movie as anything DL's done in the past.

To me, my greatest worry (besides the restraints of a low budget) is that there will be so much referencing and "paying homage" to those other similar films that it becomes more of a remake than a new movie. Missionary Man can certainly be acused of this.

Well, there are a lot of Movies with the same Stories, but the Difference is,Dolph plays always in the same Movies(not the other Actors, like De Niro,Tommy Lee Jones ,etc.)
Here the Examples:
The Mechanik:Kidnapping,Russian,Girl,Defender/Saver
Direct Contact:Kidnapping,Russian,Girl,Motorbike,Saver
Missionary Man:Motorbike,Defender
CP:Kidnapping,Russian,Girl,Defender/Saver,Motorbike
Icarus:Kidnapping,Girl Saver/Defender?
It`s so boring.Meanwhile I hate this kind of Movies
OK,Jox,he is learning, but why he always write and direct the same Stories?

Well Dolph hasn't been in a military uniform since the last Patrol, maybe it's about time he'll be in a war movie again, maybe A Russian soldier sent on a secretive mission to berlin with orders to kill Hitler :D
Or Dolph plays a rich man who is on his plane, departing from Florida and heading to Brazil on a business trip but the plane goes down in The Amazon, He survives but his pilots are killed, now he must survive the most dangerous jungle in the world, from anacondas, jaguars even indian tribes which haven't had contact with civilization yet, they give chase to Dolph to kill him.

Now there's a different story, but for these types of movies u need big budgets, i guess :(

It's obvious DC was packaged by the producers with certain aspects of TM and a title reminiscent of DIRECT ACTION etc. BUT I'd take out DC from this list because DL has nothing to do with its concept or writing except starring in it...

For sure certain motifs are the same (but it has been the case with almost all Dolph movies since the 80s) and it sounds like that's a very simplistic way of seeing them (come on MM and CP have nothing to do with one another, not in style, not story or character-wise). Then you could the same with most movies. There's also a difference to make between story and plot where story tells us what the tale is about and the plot tells how the story unfolds...
Icarus:Kidnapping,Girl Saver/Defender?

Not what's going on at all, and despite what it seems, it's very different (even the teaser trailer is misleading in a lot of ways), plus it's not the initial story he had...

OK,Jox,he is learning, but why he always write and direct the same Stories?

Most directors, especially genre movie directors do especially when, like John Carpenter for instance, they take the western (first genre of cinema and kind of born with it?) structure as a basis.

BY THE WAY I recommend everybody to read my interview with CP co-writer Steve Latshaw, it tells you a lot about the writing process and collaborating with Dolph on the script!

I think Wanted Man for Dolph will be a project to finally get "his" Western on screen. MM was problematic for him. Sony gave him a lot of shit to deal with.

If indeed Dolph can get the film made by producing and finding finance himself (JC did for Eagle Path), and set the schedules, bring in actors he wants, and do the script he set out to do, without producers making him alter the story for marketing reasons, then this could be awesome.

I hope he can give it a good 2 month shooting schedule, so there's more time to set up the action, and more time for setting up cranes, dollys etc.

I'd love to see Dolph doing a Western in mexico. I'd love it to be a period one too. Budget isn't much of an excuse, if the script is right. It can be a more intimate scale Western. If Dolph sets the rules for what he wants, and delivers, I'm sure it could be his best work to date. He's not had a directors gig yet where he's not butted heads with producers, and working within the DTV studio system, that will always be the case.

Van Damme completely made the film he wanted with TEP. And while it may not look fantastic, he's not as adept at directing as Dolph. He doesn't have the focus. But the film looks better than his other DTV, because the shooting schedule was slightly longer, giving the DP time to light all the shots properly, and give it a nice look.
It could also mean D can pick the sound companies, and composer, editor, he wants etc. Often these companies will only let you use people who work for them, or companies they have a rapport with.

Guys,is my english that bad, that you didn`t understand what I mean??
Jox,CP is the similar Story like the others, tell me,are in this Movie no Russian,no Kidnapping,no Bike,no Girl? And also in the other Movies.MM is a lit bit different, but all the same he go with a Bike or not?
I told you,a lot of Movies are the same, but the other Actors don`t play the same Role. It`s a pity ,you don`t know what I mean.
By the Way,my only Hope is,Dolph will play in 2010 the War-movie in Berlin. The Script is ready to go!

If there are no more Ideas, they should think about for a Remake of good old Movies!

I'm hoping Dolph will star in Robert Rodriguezs film Machete, when Steven Seagal probably turns down the role offered to him. I think SS probably will turn it down, because he's got too much of an ego to take a supporting role. But if it requires the presence of a known action star, maybe RR will consider Dolph?

I think I know what you mean, I don't think it's the language barrier, we're just not talking about the same thing or I don't agree with the terms you employ or your analysis:
"Russian, Kidnapping, Bike, Girl" are just elements (that could fit anywhere) they're not themes and have nothing to do with story or screenplay either. So what if he rides a bike, it doesn't fit the same purpose and nor does it have the same importance...

I want Dolph to make original and different movies as much as you do believe me, I've always supported that. Sorry if I'm being a little picky, I don't mean to be rude to you Darling!

Every time I read about this, I think of Extreme Prejudice--the kickass modern western Walter Hill made with Nick Nolte, which is one of my absolute fav movies ever. If Dolph can make anything as mindblowing as that movie, I'll be more than happy.

If anything, Dolph should do a movie where he plays a Detroit lawyer who realizes he's defending the shitbags of the world and goes vigilante. Something ALMOST original, and equally filled with room for acting and drama as well as down-to-earth action.
"I come in peace!"
"But you go in pieces, a**hole!"
