CAPTAIN POWER AND THE SOLDIERS OF THE FUTURE (1987, TV)

Postby Jox on 21 Dec 2011, 11:26

Director Gary Goddard had worked for Mattel for years and was already developing his live interactive show CAPTAIN POWER AND THE SOLDIERS OF THE FUTURE (1987-88) when he was hired to helm MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE.

Now, with the rights cleared and thanks to devoted fan / up and coming producer Roger Lay Jr (who's also about to release the much anticipated TOY MASTERS documentary about He-Man) who hooked up with Goddard, the complete CAPTAIN POWER series is finally out on DVD, in a box set packed with special features including a new 90 mins making of by Lay, audio commentaries, unaired TV movie and more...!

I had one VHS of the show (probably episode one and two) that I used to watch pretty much 3 times a day from age 8 to 10. But i don't remember any more how it was. Maybe i look around for the box one of these days ;)

Part of it is likely to be dated or a bit cheesy now, but this is a typical 80s product with influences from THE TERMINATOR to BLADE RUNNER, a pretty dark show for kids, and groundbreaking with some of the first CGI creatures, and what had caused a lot of controversy at the time: the toy 'powerjets' (=Christmas '88 for me) that you could use to shoot the robot soldiers on the screen (like in a video game now). Also you can obviously see a lot of similarities with the MOTU movie as well, the Lord Dread throne looking like Skeletor's vehicle etc. Nostalgia, sympathy for Goddard and the effort on special features made give in for the box set.

P.S. the DVD cover uses the Drew Struzan (STAR WARS, INDIANA JONES, BACK TO THE FUTURE, MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE) artwork originally commissioned by Goddard.

For the 25th anniversary, Goddard Film Group now just announced anew hour-long CAPTAIN POWER reboot TV series in development called PHOENIX RISING.

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/58689

Goddard Film Group's producing team of Gary Goddard, Roger Lay Jr and Eric Carnagey are working with former Paramount Television Senior Executive Jeffrey Hayes, who was responsible for such television hits as STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION, FAMILY TIES, and CHEERS, to bring back Goddard's Sci-fi Cult classic CAPTAIN POWER AND THE SOLDIERS OF THE FUTURE in the form of a weekly one-hour drama series titled PHOENIX RISING.

They have enlisted writers/producers Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens to develop this next evolution of the series. Recent television credits for the Reeves-Stevens include creating the new science-fiction drama series PRIMEVAL: NEW WORLD, the North American spin-off of the UK hit PRIMEVAL. They also served as writers/producers on STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE for Paramount and RACE TO MARS for Discovery.

More details will be revealed soon...

Interesting fact in the CAPTAIN POWER soundtrack liner notes:
the composer of the show Gary Guttman tells that he had been hired by Goddard to work on a temp track for MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE in Cannon offices for weeks before he started on CP. I've always thought some cues and themes were very close in both and thought that must have been Goddard's touch (who used to be a musician too).

Temp tracks are rarely originals, they're usually pieces of music from other films used on the rough while the film is being edited before the composer's original score is done.

In 1983, when advances in digital memory storage permitted developers to incorporate pre-recorded video assets into interactive media, the result was a wave of wonderfully grotesque technological chimeras incorporating the DNA of both cinema and videogames. Born of a combination of Hollywood hubris, misguided vision, and market forces in an ambitiously awkward attempt to create the perfect medium, these games became prevalent not just in arcades and on home-consoles like the SEGA-CD, but also in movie theatres, where filmmakers like Bob Gale (BACK TO THE FUTURE) experimented with creating theatrical choose-your-own-adventure experiences. A panel of FMV aficionados and enthusiasts (TBA) will be on hand to contextualize this hysterical history, all the while presenting jaw-dropping clips, both infamous and obscure.

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL!

In keeping with the theme of interactive cinema, at 9:00 PM, the Laser Blast Film Society will also be screening a rare feature-length version of the cult sci-fi television series Captain Power & The Soldiers of The Future. Created by Gary Goddard (MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE), written largely by J. Michael Straczynski (BABYLYON 5) and Larry DiTillo (BEAST WARS) and shot in and around Toronto, the series boasted impressive special effects, a compelling story, and a unique interactive feature whereby viewers could buy a toy light gun that would respond to signals from the television during an episode of the show.

Interactive gimmicks aside, the show nonetheless made for stellar sci-fi action as it spun its adventures of rebels battling evil robots in a post-apocalyptic dystopia with surprising emotional heft and weighty themes for what was originally intended to be a children’s programme. The show routinely dealt with subjects like PTSD and genocide, and its larger story arcs overtly allegorized Nazism in a cyberpunk context. The show featured thrilling pyrotechnics and ground-breaking digital effects, including fully CGI characters courtesy of the pioneering artists at Toronto’s own Arcca Animation.

Don’t miss this rare & exclusive Laser Blast presentation of the original telefilm version of the series, complete with newly restored picture, and sound, as well as vintage commercial breaks!

Reboot series teaser

EDIT
‘Captain Power’ Recharges With Reboot Series, Heads To Comic-Con
http://deadline.com/2016/07/captain-pow ... 201788233/
EXCLUSIVE: The 1980s sci-fi TV series Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future is coming back from the past, with original co-creator Gary Goddard among those behind a reboot plan for the Canada-U.S. space drama that spanned 22 episodes in syndication. The new series is titled Phoenix Rising and is in active development from Goddard’s Goddard Film Group and ex-Syfy execs Thomas Vitale and Craig Engler’s newly formed Planet X Productions.

Vitale worked at Syfy and Chiller for 22 years running the networks’ programming departments. Engler co-created and executive produced the Syfy series Z Nation, which returns for Season 3 in the fall. The Phoenix Rising pilot episode was penned by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens, whose sci-fi cred includes writing for TV’s Star Trek: Enterprise. They also created and wrote last year’s Primeval spinoff series Primeval: New World.

The plan is to raise awareness for Phoenix Rising this week at Comic-Con. Goddard Film Group partners Roger Lay Jr and Eric Carnagey are also exec producing. Todd Masters’ MastersFX will create the effects for the new series.

The original Captain Power, which starred Tim Dunigan as Capt. Jonathan Power and Peter MacNeill as Maj. Hawk Masterson, was set on Earth in the year 2147 and the aftermath of the Metal Wars, a global confrontation between humans and machines. It was one of the first series to incorporate CGI characters with live-action performers, and the Mattel toy line interacted with the visuals featured within each episode. It aired in 200 domestic North American TV markets and 46 international territories in 1987-88, and counted J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5, The Changling) among its writers.

Phoenix Rising picks up 15 years after humanity has lost a devastating war against an artificial intelligence called Overmind. Jonathan Power, the son of the man who caused that war, learns the truth about his father and discovers a new type of battle armor that will enable a small, mismatched team of soldiers and civilians to fight the Bionic armies of the New Order. Dunigan will return in a new role.

Goddard called the original Captain Power a landmark program – “a sci-fi series that was ahead of its time.” Added Vitale and Engler: “As fans of both science fiction and the Captain Power series, we’re excited to help re-imagine this iconic TV show for today’s viewers. Although the surprisingly dark themes, serialized storytelling and shocking character deaths featured within the series were well ahead of their time in 1987, they’re exactly the kind of story elements a modern viewing audience craves.”
