Just a quick look at the cast for this movie (Billy Crystal! Dolph Lundgren!) should catch your eye. But it's the inventive world of Swedish director Jonas Akerlund that really makes it worth checking out. Akerlund has directed some of the more memorable music videos of the past 20 years, as well as the visually striking features "Spun" and "Horsemen." His third movie features a man named Franklin Franklin who avoids the city life, a delightfully strange scenario that holds serious promise.

10 SXSW Soundtracks To Look Out For Including Scores By Members Of Pearl Jam, Vampire Weekend, Menomena, Tortoise & More
And adding to the curious mix is Per Gessle, founding member of 1990s Swedish sensations Roxette (behind No. 1 hits "The Look" and "It Must Have Been Love" among others). Gessle's been working as a solo artist to some success in Sweden, but this marks his first film score, and it's certainly a curveball choice, and one that will add to the film either being a real surprise or a fascinating train-wreck.

Uh, oh... that guy from Little Britain? I tried to watch that one day. I was left cringing on my sofa. Hope I can survive this one...

Dolph couldn't attend the premiere SXSW last night, here's a pic with the director Jonas Akerlund (long dark hair), Johnny Knoxville and novel/screenplay writer Chris Millis on the red carpet. The screening was sold out.

This review is better. I think "weird" and "absurd" are the keywords for this movie anyway...

Small Apartments deserves credit for getting inside your head through force of strangeness alone, and it has enough going on to merit at least some kind of interpretation.

Small Apartments is a movie of two minds both literally and figuratively. It drifts randomly between madness and sanity, multiple protagonists, and a subtext that could either be Hallmark-level treacle or a scathing dismissal of normalcy and love. Åkerlund’s attempts to confuse and mislead through grotesque characters, mood swings, and sloppy pacing keep us intrigued but rarely invested.

Much better:
“Small Apartments,” was met by audience laughter, tears, and tears from laughter. The unusual yet vibrant film...

From what we've seen of Jonas Akerlund's "Small Apartments" it is very likely a strange, yet funny film.

In other words, it's the perfect kind of flick to premiere at Austin's annual South by Southwest Film Festival.

The cast is rounded out with a wonderfully nuanced performance by Billy Crystal as a world-weary fire investigator and a spray-tanned Dolph Lundgren, unexpectedly hilarious as an egotistical pop psychologist who preaches the gospel of “brain brawn.”
