i'm PSYCHED!!! I LOVE Hickox!!! He's got a great eye, and in a way he reminds me of a 90's era Russell Mulcahy, which is a great thing. I think what he does with a DTV budget is fantastic. Just look at Blast! Can't wait to hear from him!!!

Well then it might be this New featute that allows me to watch a silent movie instead of the sign "This video contains music for which the GEMA did not grant the necessary rights". >:-(

Scottish author Frederic Lindsay, who wrote the original novel (very different from the film) in 1987, passed away at the age of 79 on May 31st.

Hickox seems more bitter about JILL RIPS now than a few years ago:
It’s hard not to smile hearing Hickox say that, considering his own experiences with meddlesome producers: first on 1997′s comic strip-based fantasy Prince Valiant (Hickox thought he was making The Princess Bride whilst the German producers wanted Braveheart), and then on 2000′s Jill Rips; an underrated serial killer thriller. “Oh my God, yeah,” he laughs when I bring ‘em up. “Well, the problem with Jill Rips was it was originally meant to be Tom Berenger and we got… Dolph Lundgren. And, well, you know what? I should have probably just left the movie at that point but I can’t do that. Dolph’s a nice guy- we’d just worked together on Storm Catcher (1999)- but he was just wrong for the part, and the friend of mine who financed it was like “just make it, Dolph’ll be great” and so we did the best we could. I actually love the way that looks too, by the way. I love the kinkiness and I love the fact I tried to make it look like a seventies porn movie, the whole thing. I wanted it to have that feel.”

This is interesting to read... I've personally always felt the film was underrated as is. It's not great, but it's certainly not horrible. And Dolph is actually pretty good in it. However, while he's good in the role, it's just not Dolph movie. I respect the fact that he was trying new things, but he just doesn't gel with the role. Glad to hear I'm not the only one who felt this way... Apparently, even the director had a similar opinion.

What's interesting though is hearing yet another director speak of his experiences on a film and mentioning that he felt saddled with Dolph in the lead role (speaking directly to Gary Goddard on MOTU). The only difference there is that Dolph was perfect for that particular role...

That's the "iconic star" stigma. I mean yeah MOTU was different because it was his first starring role and most felt his accent was too heavy (or that he was good enough of an actor) but otherwise most directors will feel the same. Dolph is a human specimen and a typecast "star" of his kind so all his roles has the Dolph Lundgren label stigma to them and it's easy for any director do dismiss him like "oh well he's not a real actor who disappears behind his role and since he's starring in it this has become a Dolph Lundgren movie written all over"... You know what I mean?

I also feel Hickox forgets things, when I talked to him in 2008 he had already forgot many things he said in his commentary, and maybe he gets confused with the editing disagreements they had. Anyway other than that he and his mum (legendary editor Anne Coates who cut MOTU) had the kindest words of him as a human being (as you know it's rare people don't).

This is how IMDB works now: the JILL RIPS page is linking to web reviews of 50 SHADES OF GREY that don't even mention JR...
