This is like an honorary credit because the movie couldn't be made without him involved and it must be a financial deal that makes it more profitable too. But he doesn't have really any say on how the movie is made unlike SKIN TRADE which he pulled from the beginning and was involved in every aspect of making the film.

I think I remember asking this same question as well a while back. If I understand the system correctly and how it works... By casting a star like Dolph who lends his name to a somewhat low-budget project, this brings a newfound attention to the project and in turn, interests some new investors. So while Dolph may not be putting his own money into the project, his name alone is helping get the film off the ground. In a sense, it's a "producer in name only."

Exactly.

Also I understand producers sometimes actually pay the star their acting fee as the "producer's salary", because when a producer hires an actor who is in the Screen Actor's Guild, they have to pay a percentage of their salary to SAG's pension and health fund, I think it's 16,8% of the salary now, so they sometimes only pay the actor scale through SAG and pay the remainder of their fee in the form of a producer's salary, thus saving a lot of money.

I'm not sure about this one but most of these projects are not SAG projects (or other crew unions) and that also keeps them low budgets. And Dolph sure isn't a SAG actor.

Really? Wow, that's interesting to hear, not so much that these lower budget movies are non-union since that's pretty common, but that Dolph's not SAG.

Most actor's who are professionally working in Hollywood or America usually are members of SAG. Even though many of Dolph's movies have been shot overseas and often with companies based not in America he's still been in some studio movies.

I think he would have had to join SAG for Rocky IV at least? If so, did he at some point decide to give up his membership?

They were already looking to make the film last year, but likely had to face set backs, or figured they could make it for money with bigger stars...

RENO, NV-- It's a sign Nevada's film incentive program will be successful; a local casting agency is holding auditions Wednesday for a film that's set to be shot in Reno and Lake Tahoe in the coming weeks.

The production will take place entirely within the state of Nevada. Even though film incentives don't become law until next year, producers tell us they're building a framework now, so they can hit the ground running in January.

Lake Tahoe's tranquil waters, disrupted by a carnivorous beast.

"It's a thriller movie; it's being directed by a local director, Jerry Duggan," said Jeffrey Spilman, a producer with Reno Tahoe Studios.

'Shark Movie,' as it is currently being called, is set to begin filming next Monday in Northern Nevada.

"Can't disclose those yet 'til we have signed agreements but there will be some nice names up here. Names you recognize and you see," said Spilman

We'll start to see more Nevada film shoots; the recently signed SB-165 gives filmmakers a 19% tax break if they shoot their movies here.

"The idea of the incentive is to hire local folks, do business with local companies and have an economic engine here that is really generated by the film industry," said Spilman.

If there is any indicator that this business is here to stay, there is a massive studio inside the Reno Sparks Convention Center. It's the new home of the Reno Tahoe Studios that will be producing films in our area pretty soon.

"Being a Reno resident here, I of course encourage it because that way i don't have to travel down to LA or the Bay to make films."

Actor and producer Brain Perry is ready for incentives to go into effect January first; he says the coming 'Shark Movie' is the first step in setting up a production framework.

"The next couple months, you're going to see a lot of people staging to get ready to shoot next year because they are going to want see how that incentive will actually play out."

Incentive-eligible films aren't your backyard production. They'll start at a half-a-million dollars and move up from there.

RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- Filming for a major motion picture is scheduled to begin soon in northern Nevada.

Reno and Lake Tahoe will serve as the backdrop for the movie with the working title "Shark Movie." It features a carnivorous beast raising havoc in the tranquil waters of the Alpine Lake. The 19 percent tax break for productions with a budget over $500,000 goes into effect Jan. 1.

Synopsis
Fiercely protective single-mom Meredith Hendricks happens to also be the best cop in her quiet town on Lake Tahoe. When a black-market exotic species dealer named Clint, is paroled from prison, something he let loose begins to make its presence known. Swimmers and land-lovers alike begin to become part of the food chain at an unbelievable rate.

Meredith and the new man in her life, a biologist named Peter, begin to investigate these brutal attacks and discover that they're not just hunting one eating machine, but a whole family of them. After a documentary crew is devoured when they don't take the threat seriously, it's up to Meredith, Peter, and the unlikely hero, Clint, to stop the most dangerous thing on the planet: A mother protecting its young. Not everyone will make it out alive, but those who do will never forget this summer at Shark Lake.

I wish it'd stay THE LAKE and not SHARK LAKE... Other than that I have a feeling Dolph plays this "unlikely hero", Clint.

Yet from the synopsis, it sounds as if this "Meridith" is the protagonist. Having Dolph as the co-lead opposite a woman isn't exactly something new for Dolph, but him playing second-fiddle to a gal is. We can hope for the best, I guess...

That shark doesn't stand a chance against giant Dolph coming from the sky!

In all seriousness though that poster does look kinda stylish, I dig it.

But I am dissapointed to hear that Dolph might not be the lead. To be honest I'm getting a little tired of seeing him do these supporting and vilain roles so much where he pops in and out of the movie all the time. That's why I'm looking forward to Skintrade so much.

That being said, even though he might have more of a supporting role in bought this one and War Pigs, at least they bring something new to the table.

I'm guessing they will be hoping to get pre-sales at AFM. Maybe they'll attach actors to the other roles by then as well.

These synopsis don't mean much (RUSH / AMBUSHED made it seemed like a lead yet none of the two actual protagonists were mentioned). And this still seems like he will be the driving force here.

There's no problem in supporting roles, the best actors often do them and Dolph had his share starting with JOHNNY MNEMONIC, but they need to be in cast driven or role-oriented projects (SMALL APARTMENTS was good in both being an ensemble cast, a gem and an unusual role), nothing less. Let's just hope they manage to get at least one other substantial name like they did with WAR PIGS.

It's actually quite possible (and common) that the shoot was postponed because they hadn't gotten the full cast yet.

Shark Lake sounds cheesy, The Lake sounds much more ominous.
