Funnily enough, comedy website Cracked.com did a similar write up for the UniSol franchise.

Amost everythig you need to know about UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: REGENERATION and DAY OF RECKONING, director John Hyams tells all in this brilliant interview:
http://www.cutprintfilm.com/features/fr ... ohn-hyams/

John Hyams is a rare case today, especially in the realm of genre films and action, of not only being a very skilled director who knows what he does, but also being able to put his work into words, almost as if (much like many plastician artists) the thinking process was as important as the work (film, painting or else) itself (if not more).

Awesome article. I love Regeneration and Reckoning. I'd love to see what Hyams could do with another instalment.
I'm interested to hear what feature he'll be working on in the fall. Hopefully someone has had sense and will give him a reasonable budget. Even the budget's that Statham's films have, Hyams could do so much with.

These guys make an argument that DoR deserves a Criterion release.

It does...

But even though Criterion doesn't go for easy sales, DOR bombed so bad in the US (even DVD sales) I doubt it's acknowledged enough to be considered. But with a two or three discs case (1 region A disc with the great 80 mins making of and audio commentary, 1 or 2 for the uncut and 3D versions with additional interviews, make a custom disc with the John Hyams video & audio interviews from the net) and a new slick cover design you could make your own Criterion-like edition.

That's what I'm doing now, compiling the best editions of each DL film with all the special features into one case.

I wasn't aware the financial performance of DOR was no good. It's hard to tell with DVD releases. I'm not surprised though, it's an incredibly difficult film for the masses to swallow I suppose.

At least in the U.S. from what I hear. For sure not only it wasn't an easy sell, but it also throwned off and turned off a lot of fans.

Reposting the disappeared MAKING OF Kickstarter video where John Hyams genuinely shares his doubts during pre-production about the project getting made:

Universal Soldier may be the only series whose DTV sequels are its best work
http://www.avclub.com/article/universal ... seq-223774
Hyams’ commitment to making a great DTV action film resulted in the unexpected windfall of a film series that became great once it left the stifling atmosphere of studio film making. Universal Soldier: Regeneration isn’t just a good action film; it retroactively makes all the films in the series prior to it look like milquetoast preambles for the main event. One of the most notable aspects of the action is how the director embraces the all-systems-go ferocity of the MMA aesthetic, infusing even the outlandish Unisol ability to punch people through walls with a gritty realism.

the director turned Universal Soldier: Day Of Reckoning into a must-see work of art. Combining the kinetic action of his previous film with an elliptical, mind-bending story delving into themes of identity and loss, Hyams managed to Trojan-horse an experimental art film into the world, wearing the veneer of a DTV actioner.
The first 20 minutes are more art-horror than anything, and by the time the car chases and shoot-outs begin, the movie has already created as many indelible images as a David Lynch film.

Review from the mediabook release:
http://bloody-disgusting.com/reviews/33 ... ldier-yet/

Unboxing

(preferably turn off or down the sound because the guy sounds very hyper whether you understand German or not)

So the booklet features an interview with the German voice of Jean-Claude Van Damme, and some stills and behind the scenes photos of the film other than that it's the same discs as the Planet Media one.
